Penn State Crisis Case Study

I am asking these four questions about the Penn State crisis.
1. What do you think would have happened if the Penn State board had got the police involved after that first report of sexual nature involving the assistant coach?
a. I believe if the Penn State board had gotten involved after that first report it could have save Penn State a lot of backlash. It could have also kept Penn State from losing their final 2011 season home game. “Penn State lost its final 2011 season home games, against Nebraska, without Paterno in his usual spot” (Swann 382).
2. Do you think that the head coach should have reported any reports involving sexual nature and the assistant coach straight to the police or just the Board?

For those who are familiar with the world of baseball, it is common knowledge that a pitcher should have a protective L-screen in front of them in order to prevent possible injury. The case of Shawn Bukowski vs. Clarkson University et al. showcases a situation where a pitcher was struck in the face by a line drive during a practice session; this can be attributed to the absence of an L-screen. Shawn Bukowski sued his university and head coach James Kane for damages related to his injury; the results of this case and the reasoning for it is quite interesting. I will discuss the key information regarding this case, the different factors that relate to the outcome, and how the case could have played out differently if the NCAA had better rules…

David Pryor knew he was beat. He knew it from the start, but he spoke from his heart, picked up support from Cliff Gibson, but they went down strongly but quietly Thursday as the University of Arkansas board of trustees voted 8-2 for a $160 million expansion to Reynolds Razorback Stadium. It wasn't denied the project most likely will be more in the neighborhood of $200 million when completed. Before doing the math, which shows that is more than $60,000 for each of the proposed 3,000-plus additional seats -- all in luxury suites most of us will only see through binoculars -- understand a big part of that money is for the new athletic facility that will have underground parking so, as one former trustee said, it will keep the administration from…

With recruiting season coming to a close, the NCAA has contacted me, the Athletic Director at the University of Kentucky, to inform me that they have evidence that Men’s Basketball coach, John Calipari, has violated several NCAA recruiting rules during the off-season of 2016. Upon committing to the University of North Carolina, the player took advantage of the NCAA self-disclosure rules, and reported that he was improperly recruited by Coach Calipari. As the athletic director, I have decided to utilize the “SLEEPE” Principle in order to review the situation to ensure the best decision is made in regards to the University of Kentucky. From 1998 to 2011, assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky molested young boys on Penn State campus (Ferrell et al., 2015). It was later revealed that school officials and football coaches did very little to report and investigate early allegations that could have prevented several molestations. Cohen and DeBenedet (2012) contend that the reason university officials failed to report the sexual assaults was due to a phenomenon known as Groupthink, “whereby sound decision making is impaired by the bigger concern of group unity and preservation” (para. 2). To this end, school officials feared damaging the reputation of the university and football program more than seeking justice for the victims. The leadership contributed to the ethical violations at Penn State by neglecting their ethical responsibilities and not properly pursing the sexual assault allegations.…
