Penn Museum Observation Report

Since I first attended Ancient History class in seventh grade, I have had an interest in discovering and sharing people’s stories, whether current or thousands of years in the past. The Penn Museum, with its mission to illustrate the human story, seems like an excellent place to continue to grow this passion. Although I have mostly worked with education, I wish to explore other aspects of museum administration, such as collection and curation and hope to develop a holistic view of how many departments come together to create a successful museum. I have completed coursework that both covers the broad discipline of archaeology, as well as specific niche subjects, including art history courses that focus on classical art and artifacts. These classes have helped me understand not only the history of archaeology, but also methods used to analyze and interpret archaeological material in the field and during exhibition. As an intern at the Howard Gotlieb Archival Research Center, I worked independently and with a team to create public displays. I synthesized tasks into manageable pieces and worked with other interns to ensure a pleasing and …show more content…
Whether it be leading tours and demonstrations at the Cincinnati Museum of Natural History or developing and implementing programs for Burke Museum summer camps, I apply organizational and communication skills to ensure a positive experience to those served. I also developed my own program, Be History, where I researched and developed lesson plans based off student interest which encompassed both education and craft components. I delivered my program to two local Boys and Girls Clubs bi-monthly and continually enhanced logistical problems to deliver the best finished product possible. I enjoy sparking children’s interest in museums and would enjoy continuing this role as a learning programs

What is the purpose of a museum or a historic site? On the surface, many would indicate that it is education. Through his monograph, Upon the Ruins of Slavery: Slavery, the President’s House at Independence National Historical Park, and Public Memory, Roger C. Aden argues that the purpose of a museum is much more complex than that, and it varies from person to person. He examined the various processes and problems that occur in the creation of a historical site. Specifically, Aden examines Independence National Historical Park.…

Another piece that I enjoyed in the exhibit was Matt Bollinger’s work “Storage.” I thought the way that he used acrylic paint and collage, really went well together. So well, that it was hard to differentiate where he used the acrylic and where he added items. One of the pieces that I didn’t care for was Thomas Kiefer’s print “Satisfies!” The print was a picture of several different types and sizes of Snickers.…

Due to my unpredictable work schedule I had to forgo the planned visit. I was slightly apprehensive about this, because I wanted a personal tour, which they offer on planned visits only. After signing the guest book in the front foyer of the museum, I was greeted by a young, knowledgeable volunteer who was more than happy to show me around. It was unusually slow that day so I had the volunteer’s undivided attention, as she did mine. She ushered me through answering every question and explaining each section in greater detail.…

My visit to the Nelson-Atkins museum was unlike any of my other visits to museums. First of all, I had a solid purpose for going and found myself paying much more attention to the intricacies of pieces I was viewing. Secondly, due to its sheer size, this museum had a wide variety of art from many different cultures and time periods, giving each hallway and room a different feel. Lastly, I felt much more educated about what I was viewing, when compared to previous experiences. I waited until the 8th of July to drive to Kansas City and thus had read most of content that would be covered over the semester.…

erected as a public experience, it lacks cultural impact in the aspect of framework design. In contrast to the Oklahoma museum, the Tampa museum has artworks that connect human history from different time period group into sections. The Tampa museum created a whole different life impression about the significance of museums than the Oklahoma museum. From time immemorial, humans have created visual images and these images carry meaning based on their context of creation. Art is appreciated from its shape and content base on the creator of the image, background and motive.…

From the minute you walk in, you can see almost the entire span of the museum. The concierge desk is to my left, holding a man on the slightly older side and a woman who appears to be younger, sporting some fabulous purple lipstick, standing up next to him. My mom pays as I notice, first thing to my left, pictures, hundreds of pictures. Dated magazine articles from the time Harvey Milk ran in office, pictures of transgender women from the 60’s and 70’s, pictures of men smiling next to each other, bills that were passed, and many other miscellaneous items all contained within the tiny confines of the colorful…

These museums were ahead of the times and eventually were the cause of traditional museums to produce results of more inclusivity in larger museums. Eventually, The Anacostia Community Museum’s success paved the way for change in the other Smithsonian museums in D.C. And eventually because of this, “museums with significantly larger budgets sought to ‘mainstream’ African American history and culture in their programs” (Burns 138). The museums, like the Anacostia Community Museum, created community engagement and traveling museum exhibitions to reach the largest amount of people possible and inspired change in other more traditional museums across the United…

Two summers ago, I experienced an epiphany in the Contarelli Chapel in the Church of San Luigi dei Francesi in Rome. While I am certainly not the first to have had a revelatory experience there, mine was not of the religious kind. Rather, mine was the illuminating realization that my path leads where my dual and symbiotic passions for history and art have been inexorably guiding me my entire young life. I have long been fascinated by the past and drawn to museums and other repositories of the past. The first time I breathed the chill conditioned air of the American Museum of Natural History, my father had to lift me on his shoulders to give me an unobstructed view of the fossil remains of a triceratops.…

Through attending a neuroscience program called Camp Neuro at the New York Medical College and taking AP psychology, I have been able to apply my knowledge in myriad classes. My understanding of the biopsychosocial approach to psychology helps me analyze texts in English and moral situations in ethics. The interdisciplinary seminar Modes of Being would serve as a way to continue this intellectual exploration that I am already pursuing in conjunction with my major in psychology. I find that through my experiences, I have been prepared to be both successful and active in this community. The small class sizes will also contribute to my success.…

Although I am not certain of my specific career path, I hope setting aside time for graduate study will support me in solidifying my passions and finding my purpose. However, in essence I wish to support and facilitate the magic of museums. I am moved by the times I was struck with awe looking at a dinosaur replica as a child, excited by stone tools from ancient societies as a teenager, or inspired by an artist’s dynamic brushstrokes as an adult. I want to internalize these experiences and connections, using my work to recreate them for others. Allowing visitors to forge unique memories while inspiring wonder is my ultimate…
