In the painting, the Suitors are outside looking upon Penelope and offering many gifts, including their love. Penelope rejects and avoids them for she greatly loves and misses Odysseus. With Odysseus being gone for so long, at any time Penelope could have forgot about Odysseus and married one of the Suitors. Instead, she refuses because her love for Odysseus is pure and the weaving depicts the denial of the suitors love and Penelope’s love for Odysseus. In the painting, Penelope is weaving and later unweaving a cape for Odysseus’ father to stall time for Odysseus’ return.
