Pema Karpo Meditation Center Reflection

Pema Karpo Meditation Center When I first signed up for religion, I knew it would be a challenge. However, I dream of becoming a Pastor, therefore, I knew I needed to learn about all the other different religions in the world. Although Christianity is all I believe in, I wanted to be educated about other religions as well as mine. This study was extremely hard for me, because I am so dedicated to what I have been taught and what I believe in. I contemplated on taking a zero for the assignment, because I felt like I was disrespecting my God. However, after praying I realized that God would want me to do well in school and reach my goals in life. Therefore, I decided to go with my classmates to Pema Karpo Mediation Center in Memphis, Tennessee. It is a Buddhist meditation site. As my classmates and I drove up to the site, the people were very friendly. They …show more content…
I always knew people worshiped other Gods and had other religions besides the one that I have. However, it was a different experience to see how they worshiped and showed dedication. The service lasted longer than a normal church service that I would normally attend. Even though they knew we were of a different religion, the people were friendly. They made us feel welcomed and wanted. We were all able to participate in every part of the service. I did not feel singled out at anytime. The service leader was interesting, and had good things to say. She was a great speaker. Her message encouraged me to be mindful. I was encouraged to not only live in my right now, but to acknowledge where I am right now. I learned that I need to be aware. If there is anything I admire about the Buddhist religion, it is that they are so happy. I believe that because they live and the moment and are mindful, that is was causes them to have a deep sincere happiness. Despite being an outsider is not enjoyable, the experience was one to

Good morning, today I was asked to talk about the talk by Bonnie L. Oscarson of this last conference, and explain my feelings towards it. I read the talk and felt that we as young men & young women should give more service to the church. In the talk by Bonnie L. Oscarson, It stated, “Each person has something important to contribute and has unique talents and abilities that help the important work along.” The abilities that we as young women have help the service to spread like a weed. The big change that has helped spread this weed is the prophet just pronounced that 14 and older are now able to start ministering.…

Before going into the temple, we all had to cover our heads. The girls used scarves to cover their head and the guys used either handkerchiefs that they had brought themselves or the caps that were in the temple entrance. Once inside, we took off our shoes and put them on a show rack before entering the Main Hall. When we first walked into the Main Hall, we followed our group leader up to the front to bow to the Adi Granth. The service had already been in session for a while, so walking up to the front of the room felt different and a little awkward.…

Both my parents are Buddhist so they tend to go to a (Vietnamese) temple mostly around Buddhist and Vietnamese holidays which gives me an opportunity to observe a Buddhist temple. I actually visited two temples, one called “Chua Dieu Phap" (located in San Gabriel, California) and one called “Vietnamese Buddhist Zen Meditation” (located in Renton, Washington). I first attended “Chua Dieu Phap”, it’s strictly a Vietnamese temple so everything was in Vietnamese (obviously). Everyone at the temple was nice but mostly minded their own business. When you first walk in, you see a bunch of monks sitting on a seat cushion and chanting mantras, you’re required to take off your shoes and find a seat and grab a mantra book.…

I had the opportunity to visit Deer Park Buddhist Center back home in Wisconsin. Deer Park is a hotspot for Buddhism across the Midwest, and it serves as a haven of learning and growth for Buddhist monks from all over the world. Before venturing into Deer Park, I had very little knowledge on what it meant to be a Buddhist. I labelled their beliefs as foreign to me, simply because I have never taken it upon myself to learn more about what the Buddhist community actually is. After experiencing a religion so different than my own, I feel like my perception towards religion as a whole has changed.…

Between the dates of October 7th to the 21st, I visited the Buddhist temple called the Hsi Fang temple located in San Diego, CA at Park Blvd. Although Buddhism is my religion, I never knew much about. Before visiting a Buddhism temple, I felt that my experience there was very eye opening, and gave me a whole new understanding and appreciation for Buddhist practices and beliefs. In my mind, I thought that there are a few Buddhist temples in San Diego, such as Chua Ba Thien Hau, Tinh Xa Ngoc Minh (Bhikkuni Buddhist Congregation), or Wat Lao Buddharam. Hsi Fang, is a Chinese Ch’an and Pure Land Buddhist temple.…

This week was interesting and having to reach out to a person who follows a non-western approach to life was simple. My wife follows and believes no harm should come to anybody. She follows the approach that we should treat others the way we want to be treated. Her vision was also based that people should be more kind. There is never a reason for violence.…

Other religions have always been looked down on by my family, friends, and community, which has lead me to be highly uneducated about religions other than Christianity. Prior to attending this event, I had not had any type of personal experience with the Buddhist religion. My grandparents live down the road from a Buddhist temple recently built and are in amazement of their bizarre practices. Because of our ignorance of the Buddhist religion, my family has never spoken of it or other religions in a positive connotation whatsoever. Reflecting on my experience with the Nechung Oracle and my newfound educational standpoint of Buddhism has left me with a much more sympathetic and receptive position to the religion that I hope to instill within…

Journal Reflection 4 3/19-3/23: This week we learned and talked about forgiveness in our relationships and how religion plays a part in that. This struck a cord in my heart because I think in four out of my five classes we discussed forgiveness all around the same time. So I was hearing all about forgiveness and my friend sent me an amazing video on why we should forgive. So it kind of felt like it was a sign from God and God using everything and everyone in my life to help me forgive. Forgiveness is definitely one of the hardest things I struggle with.…

For my musical ethnography, I was originally going to attend a showing of the “Rocky Horror Picture Show”, but it ended up being sold out last minute. At that point, I began to worry because that was the only event I had planned to attend. As my worry was starting to progress, I remembered, and also took a quick glance at the types of events we could attend and saw that it said we could attend a religious service. I quickly looked up services in my area for the next day and came across a website called “WON Buddhism of North Carolina”. It peaked my interest and I found out that a service was going on the next day in Chapel Hill, NC which is fairly close to me since I reside at home.…

I feel I have cultural biases towards my own culture, which is American or White culture. I have lived in Southern California my entire life and have only traveled to four different states within the U.S. When I was a child, my family moved around a lot, but most of the cities I grew up in were predominately Caucasian. While attending grade school and college, I was exposed to many different races, but I feel the people I 've met were Americanized so I don 't know much about other cultures. I chose to take the Asian American IAT because I wanted to know if I subconsciously preferred American faces to Asian American faces.…

It began around 6pm on a Friday night and was not concluded till around 10pm. Going into this experience I was not really sure what to expect, however what I took away from it will be a key reminder for me many years to come when discussing other cultures faith and devotion to Jesus. I arrived at the church and was greeted with big smiles and hand shakes as I entered what appeared to be both a fellowship area and childcare area.…
