Peggy's Views On Gender Stereotypes

I proudly identify myself as a female Filipino Canadian who believes in equality. My parents were born in the Philippines and I grew up in Canada. In today’s society, I feel as if I am a minority because of my race and my gender. The article written by Peggy opens my eyes and enables me to recognize the advantages she has because of the colour of her skin. Peggy states all the privileges she receives, “I can go into a music shop and find music of my race represented”. Peggy says that it’s mostly her race that is widely represented in the music industry, which made me lose hope for myself and my aspirations. I hope that in the future I can obtain a successful singing career, have my music sold and listened to around the world. However, having to realize that the industry represents white individuals. Peggy’s statements make me believe something I have been trying to ignore, however I feel hopeless for my future career knowing white privileges in media occur. Peggy also states, “I can swear, or dress in old clothes, or not answer letters, without having people attribute these choices to the bad morals, poverty, or illiteracy of my race”. Because of my background and gender, I feel that I don’t have the same privileges as a white person does or male. White people and men are given opportunities that are difficult for me to obtain. Nonetheless, this article upsets me because I don’t want anyone to experience the disadvantages because of their physical appearance. I want to be offered the same privileges everyone is given, I don’t want to feel excluded, seen differently, and I don’t want to have to second guess my goals in life because of my race or gender. I am still granted my rights and justice, however, this article opens my eyes to truly understand that white privileges and male dominance are
