Peggy Orenstein’s book, “Cinderella Ate My Homework” (2011) characterizes the famous Wholesome to Whoresome Disney characters. (111) Peggy’s book talks about famous pop stars that were considered wholesome and set good examples for the younger students , and grew up to be whoresome women who have children still following in their negative footsteps. She uses different Disney character’s for example Miley Cyrus, who started who started as an imperfect regular teenage girl like everyone else and secretly a pop star. Then she slowly started taking sexual pictures until it got out of hand and viral. Brittany Spears was another one she used that turned Whoresome with her innocent sexuality.…
In a recent poll performed by The Washington Post, six out of ten women declare themselves to be a feminist (Cai and Clement). In Ellen Ullman’s essay, “How to Be a ‘Woman Programmer,” she argues that women today “face a new, more virile and virulent sexism” (729). However, Saul Kaplan, author of “The Plight of Young Males,” adds to the gender inequality argument by stating, “Young men in the United States are in trouble by any measure of educational attainment” (732). It has become common today to argue about women’s inequality or focusing on solely the school’s education methods to equip future men, which we tend to overlook the deeper problems which are the results of our rapidly growing feminist culture.…
I believe this is crucial because it is rare to find institutions where they specifically teach about women rights. Nonetheless, we are fortunate enough to have the opportunity to take liberal curriculums where gender studies is one of the majors offered for undergraduates. I believe these courses allow both males and females to be more open-minded and recognize that it is our responsibilities to constantly seek better changes. In one of my classes this year, we watched a TEDx clip of an active feminist. She said there were not enough female leaders because a lot of people still underestimate their abilities.…
If you are a women and you want to assert yourself in a men domain, I barely think that a course taught in a different style would change the output significally. Also there is more female than male in…
Cinderella is an all time classic tale kept alive by tradition passed it down from generation to generation. Older versions of Cinderella come as a surprise to many since it does not always have a happy ending. Modern children's literature does not compare to older revisions as it leaves traces from other cultures, provide invaluable lessons, the writers were great storytellers, and the ability for children to dream. Older people have a beloved book that has touched them in some way whether that be reading it when they were young or recalling their parents telling them. The heartbreaking news to find out the younger generation are not reading what helped shaped society, by their powerful meanings.…
Journal Assignment Two: Gender Norms in Your Life This course as a whole has opened my eyes to realize how much our gender plays into the decisions and actions we make every day. I take advantage that doing gender, for me specifically, isn’t an ongoing struggle that it can be for those that do not fit directly into the gender binary. Doing gender is referring to how we behave and interact with others based upon socially constructed expectations for each gender. Instead of being an individual and behaving in the way we would like, we always have to consider if what we are doing is what society believes would be appropriate or reasonable for a female or male.…
Jasmine, I love your post!! In my English class, we had to read Girl with a Pearl Earring, it was amazing book, but I do not want to spoil the ending. But it was a disappointment because she was training to become an amazing artist. In my religion class, I said this quote, and it is true today as it always was back then.…
I love feminism. I am a much braver woman because of feminism. Women and men need feminism, just like we need air. We have so many opportunities and things to be thankful for because of feminism. I have hundreds of reasons why I needed feminism, and how I have become a better person because of it.…
Responding to the Critic’s idea: Young girls tend to imagine and dream of being whisked away by a charming and wealthy prince because of fairytales like Cinderella that show and encourage it. I agree with Jack Zipes’ analysis on the decisions that women in fairy tales make. This supports the fairytale Cinderella and the decision that Cinderella made. Jack Zipes says that “comic endings call upon young females to value communal stability over individual needs.” meaning that the women in fairy tales made the decision to chose communal stability which is marrying a wealthy and handsome prince instead of individual needs, which is being an independent woman who looks after herself, provides her herself and creates her own wealth instead of…
A defining moment, for those fortunate enough, is one’s college career. It is a time of self-discovery, new experiences, independence, but above all, the time to work toward a higher education. Adrienne Rich, in her convocation speech “Claiming an Education,” highlights the vital importance of higher education. Moreover, Rich seeks to empower the young women in the audience to seize control of their education. In her speech, Rich explains that it is not only important for women to attain a college degree, but to take command of their education (and their lives in general) by resisting society’s traditional view of women.…
How much of what we do influences children at a young age? Things that we do that influence children, such as giving them toys and clothes based on their gender. Toys and clothes could be considered more purposeful way to engender children, but sometimes there are actions that parents do without even knowing towards their children. Without the parents knowing they are setting gender norms for their children and this would possibly affect them in the future. In the readings of “From Women, Men, and Society” by Claire Renzetti and Daniel Curran and the reading “What’s Wrong with Cinderella” by Peggy Orenstein, the authors write about how parents and society form children in stereotypical ways and how it creates gender norms.…
Significance in revealing the identity in “Girl” Born the oldest and only girl of her family Jamaica Kincaid felt like her mother turned away from her at a young age. The distant relationship between her mother and her spark the theme for Kincaid’s works. On June 26, 1978, Kincaid wrote what is to be one of her most iconic works till this day. “Girl” is a one-sentence short story.…
