During the 1920s in Burma, a boy in his mid-twenties whom was raised within a brothel as put on trial for the crime of raping and possible murder of a local girl. To the villagers it was an open-and-shut case of a young girl, a virgin, being found naked and injured in the arms of the brothel boy, as he did not flee the scene of the crime. The scene and the victim showed apparent signs that the girl had struggled during the rape, which had caused her to hit her head on a sharp rock. The girl was rushed to her home to seek treatment. The village men beat the boy until he was unconscious and bleeding from several wounds from being repeatedly kicked.…
The most damning evidence against Mary Surratt came from Surrattsville tavern keeper John Lloyd (Linder, 2002). According to Linder, Lloyd told the Military Commission that about a month before the assassination he was visited and asked by three other conspirators to conceal two carbines, ammunition, about twenty feet of rope, and a monkey-wrench. Mary Surratt suggested hiding them under joists in a second-floor room. Lloyd testified that three days before the assassination, Mary Surratt told him that “the shooting irons” left at his home by the conspirators weeks ago would be needed soon. On the day of the assassination, according to Lender (2002), Mrs. Surratt once again brought up the subject.…
On 03/04/2016 I, Deputy Daniel Pruitt was dispatched to St. Francis Hospital Room 3234 for a abuse compliant. I spoke to Adult Protective Services worker Melinda Hearn. Melinda stated she was contacted by the hospital for a possible elderly abuse. I arrived to speak to Hattie Falbo who is the victim. Hattie is 91 years old and was in the care of her daughter Betty Smith and her Husband Lawrence Smith.…
“ Even if it is ‘likely’ or ‘probable’ that she committed the murder, she must be acquitted. The standard is proof beyond a reasonable doubt. ”(Dershowitz, WSJ) In 2008, Casey Anthony, mother to 3 year old Caylee Anthony, stepped into the public eye for being suspected of the disappearance of her daughter. Casey’s mother and father, George and Cindy Anthony, questioned their daughter’s ability to be a fit mother.…
Living the life of the rich and famous may not be as great as it seems. In fact, it could be deadly. For instance, the Borden family lived an extravagant life and seemed to have it all, but it all was taken away from them on August 1892. Although the case remains unsolved, evidence and research leads to a clear killer, Lizzie Borden. Andrew Borden and Lizzie’s stepmother, and Abby Borden were brutally murdered on August 4, 1892.…
The Problem of Induction (Hume) The problem of induction or inductively reasoning is that we base our predispositions entirely upon our empirical observations, which can easily cause situation error. This is made concrete when repetition or patterns seem to emerge to human perception. Hume coins this term inductive predictions, in which we take our experience of past events and apply those beliefs to the current situation at hand, which is exactly what happened in the New York Times article regarding the mislabeling of Mildred C. Clarke.…

At the beginning of the book, I felt bad for Jennifer Thompson. My mind was not prepared for what I was about to read. Before this book I thought I had a pretty good understanding of how the Criminal Justice system worked. I also never put much thought in the victim 's role in the matter or what part they played in the process of the trial. Most of all, I had a belief that if you were truly innocent there is no way that you could be convicted of a crime that you did not commit.…
In the book “Ordinary Injustice” by Amy Bach, chapter four titled “Show Trial”, describes a number of different cases showing wrongful convictions being processed through the criminal justice system based off of false confessions. In Chicago, there was a nine-year-old girl named Lisa Cabassa was found raped and killed in the back of an alley a couple miles from her home. Two months after the rape and murder of Lisa, a witness named Judy called the police to give her testimony on the crime. Her statement consisted of her telling the police the people involved with the crime were named Michael Evans and Paul Terry, whom were teenagers from the neighborhood. She spotted them with Lisa that night.…
While reading the article, “Andrew and Hannah”, by Pamela Colloff, the one thing I was kept thinking was that all this evidence was very circumstantial. Every piece of evidence they were holding against hannah made no sense, and they could not make scario that fit Hannah’s personality. I do firmly believe that Hannah is innocent meaning that she did not kill her son, but unfortunately she was found guilty by a judge and jury. This made me very upset and I feel deeply sorry that hannah had to go through this process. There were many false stories that depicted Hannah as being as cold-hearted child killer when that is not the case.…
Have you ever thought if a criminal could be falsely? Perhaps not, you would think the judges or police would have good evidence to contradict the criminal. Well there's a law, guilt beyond a reasonable doubt, which means that the accused is the only logical person who could have done the crime even if hard evidence is lacking. On January 13, 1999 Hae Min Lee a senior at Woodlawn high school had disappeared. Right after school she was suppose to pick up her cousin, who was in kindergarten but never showed up.…
This also created bias judgement from the judge, David Burnett, who continuously denied innocence of suspects, although strong supporting evidence was present. One of the evidence found was a piece of hair on one of the boy’s shoe lances. With use of advanced DNA technology, the hair was tested and a connection was made with one of the stepfathers, Terry Hobbs. Hobbs told the cops that he had not seen any of the boys that day, but a witness from his neighbourhood contradicted his statement. Due to the bias judgement of the police officers during the investigation, no one took time to question Hobbs’ neighbours to support his statement, but inevitably took his word for it.…
“It took them only a short time to reach their verdict. “Guilty of murder in the first degree,” said the foreman of the jury” (David 15). The jury disregarded all of the reasonable doubt shown, and declared them guilty without even much deliberation. Despite this verdict, the defense had expected this and were ready to appeal the verdict. New evidence arose after the trial, and this evidence should have cleared the two of all guilt.…
Going into the field of law enforcement, it is important for officers to prepare and follow correct procedures in order to increase their credibility as an officer, and to aid in a guilty verdict. Evidence to the Court Evidence is a crucial element during trial to increase the credibility, reliability, and validity of an individual’s testimony. In the QB trial video, R v. Perry and Manitoba (2016) a wallet, a Timex watch, a kitchen knife, and a gun replica entered in as physical evidence and can act as direct, or indirect evidence connected to a crime. Usually, this type of evidence is entered through a witness, which in this case was Monty Hall who was the victim.…
