Pegasus: An Appropriate Explanations

Decent Essays
For my constellation I have chosen Pegasus. I have chosen this constellation because flying creatures have always interested me and I think it is one of the more beautiful constellations in the sky. The near perfect rectangle in the center of the constellation is also very interesting and makes the constellation even more beautiful. I also prefer constellations with several stars and Pegasus is made up of 18 different stars!

The myth of this constellation I have chosen from Greek mythology. Medusa was a terrible creature who had the power to turn people to stone with a single look. A boy had been told that the only way he could save his mother is by killing the monster Medusa. When the boy cut off her head out sprang a white winged horse.

Battle Flag As I was scanning the topic list for another topic to write curiosity paper #3 on one article popper out at me called “Tom Petty on past Confederate flag use”. It is a relatively short article written by Andy Greene and published by Rolling Stones about why Tom Petty agrees with South Carolina’s decision to take the confederate flag down from their government buildings. Even though the timing of the lowering of the flag could have been a bit better, the country was torn between white on black violence, I still agree with the decision South Carolina legislature made.…

Many ancient civilizations worshipped the sun, stars, and the moon, believing it would bring them closer to their gods. In Assyrian and Babylonian civilizations, they gazed up into the sky each night and recorded what they saw. They realized that the stars orbited in the same way each night. “They soon learnt to recognize those that seemed fixed to the vault of heaven, reappearing each night in the same place. And they saw shapes in the constellations and gave them names” (Gombrich, 20).…

Athanasia, the Greek Goddess of Destiny and Inevitability, is the daughter of Ananke (the Greek goddess of necessity and compulsion) and Janus (the Roman god of beginnings, transitions and endings). Ananke was driven mad by her daughters, the three Fates (Moirae), after she betrayed them by stealing their Thread of Life under the effects of the goddess Hera. She injured many deities. She was punished and sent to a deserted castle, where she would have to marry a beast. Ananke wasn’t allowed to see the beast (because he was so horrifying), so the beast only showed up at night.…

My favorite constellation is Pegasus. In the second century, it was listed as a constellation along with forty-seven others by the astronomy Ptolemy. Also, Pegasus particularly interests me because of the near perfect arrangement of four stars in a square: Markab, Scheat, Algenib, and Alpheratz/Sirrah (to use their Arabic names) are the four corners of the square asterism.…

In the translated book, Seneca Six Tragedies, by Emily Wilson, the one of the Greek tragedies, Medea, focuses on the personification of Fortune throughout the depiction of a story about women who was betrayed and abandoned by her husband. It is notable that the suffering undergone by the characters of this tragedy is seen through their behaviors and emotions, but the guiding hand leading to all their calamities is Fortune itself. The notion that pushes Jason to leave his kingdom to begin with is that he seeks to be reunited with his prosperity after it was ripped away from him with the death of his father. Continually, Fortune’s hand was seen in Medea’s actions with killing her family and leaving her own homeland. She first deems it was…
