Peg Tyre’s article helps express the evolution of teaching literacy with an emphasis on the recent change and experiment in the public school New Dorp located within Staten Island, New York. Tyre interviewed staff throughout different departments and the principal to understand where they started and where they were heading to in education. At New Dorp, Principal Deirdre DeAngelis attempted to improve the school’s test scores in multiple ways; firing bad staff, finding funding to break the school into smaller learning communities, and finding sponsors to help create after-school programs to aid in literacy.
