There are many reasons why I believe I qualify to become a peer tutor. I believe I possess the required skills and personality that would make me an effective tutor. I am aware of that there are responsibilities and limitations as a peer tutor. To begin with, I believe that I have the leadership experience and skills that would make me an effective peer tutor. Throughout my years at LMS and even before middle school, I have learned how to work in groups and partners efficiently. I have practiced that skill through assignments, projects, and other daily schoolwork with my fellow students. Without the practice and experience that I have had due to the help of my teachers, parents, and myself I wouldn’t have the leadership skills that I have …show more content…
I didn’t like to have fun as much while working on the project. With the help of teachers and my parents I have learned to have some fun while working with others to make the assignment that we are doing fun and engaging to do. I am able to work and have fun at the same time so the people I work with aren’t tense either which made it fun to learn and work with me. As a student that has went through the same things that other younger students have gone through, I have the ability to relate to them and feel what they are going through. I have a sympathetic personality. When people come and talk to me they knew that I will listen to them patiently and care to talk to them about what they feel. As a peer tutor, I will be able to easily to relate to other students and talk to them and help them patiently and willingly through assignments or other school troubles they are having. For instance, if a student is having writers block or is feeling that they don’t have any ideas for a project I am an imaginative and caring person. I am willing to help and put in the same effort helping them as I would putting effort in my own work. I have had a load of experience with interacting and working with groups. For the peer reflection project, I interviewed Alexis Dowdell about the time her family adopted her cousin, Rochell. I thought this process was very interesting. Interviewing someone I never spoke to before was new. Even though this was a different experience, I was not nervous or overthinking about the right approach. I felt the right approach to interview Alexis was to be myself.…

Some organizations have formal mentoring programs which seek to connect older people to younger people in need of friendship and guidance. But the majority of mentorship happens informally, and occurs when a more experienced community member adopts one or more younger persons who they meet through a church, club, volunteer organization or other means. As a foreign student attending the University of Wisconsin, Madison, I was lucky enough to have met an older woman through a local church that reached out to foreign students, inviting them to sponsored events. Her help was invaluable in guiding me through this period of study; our friendship lasted until her passing many years later. Of course, mentorship is not for everyone.…

The most pressing issue in the world today is a mentoring leadership. Most leaders don not invest in their juniors, they do not intentionally prepare young people for future leadership. Mentoring is a means by which leaders “can provide opportunities for the development of capability in young people” (Brian Gay, 1994). De Pree (2004) summed it up as “one of the chief duties of any leader” and that it essential in leadership development. Several biblical passages echo the importance mentor-ship.…

Mentoring is a process of learning through others. It’s been used for many years and now many companies have it as a requirement for their learning programs. It helps a person have a good development and retention of information, it also helps an individual have better interactions with each other. Our visits to El Paso Community College in the mentoring program were helpful and even though the students did not engage with us as much as we hoped for, it helps the mentors figure out ways and try to get others involved.…

    B. The largest factor that affects my students learning is extensive gaps in attendance at school and in the education system. I have one student who just started school this year, one who was absent for two months, and several who miss regularly. A possible instructional strategy to minimize the negative affects absences have on students is through peer tutoring. In peer tutoring, the students are able to work with their peers who missed school and catch them up on the subjects missed.…

One of the most common misconceptions surrounding the Peer Tutoring program is that the class is specific to students who plan on pursuing a career in teaching post-secondary. This couldn’t be more false. True, aspiring teachers would definitely benefit from the course, however, the skills developed throughout a semester as a tutor, are skills that are essential and transferable to any chosen career path. Any student, no matter his or her ambitions, can profit equally from enrolling, and I’d strongly recommend anyone invited to join, to do so.…

After all the time and energy spent on writing papers and reading responses, it all boils down to a grade and set of skills that can be carried in the future. I started out the year with a decent skill in writing receiving an average grade, by my standard, in the first paper, Literacy Narrative. It was the first paper that I ever felt proud of, which I attribute to the use of multiple drafts compared to just submitting the first. I capitalized on the use of peer reviews as it can be challenging to view my writing from another ’s point of view.…

While observing, I began to see that many students had ongoing questions about homework, need help in a certain subject, or need increase motivation to get their work done. The idea of this after-school tutoring session was to help any student who needed extra time to understand the material. I thought each teacher really was focused on the essentials to mentoring students for success. The success in homework, was given in motivation, monitoring, and demonstrating what to do.…
