Peer Tutor Reflection

Reflecting on my experience so far as a peer tutor, I must say that it is one unique and excellent learning experience. The teacher that is currently providing me with a chance to peer tutor is Mr. Calvert. Every day two, first block, I am in his learning center class assisting him with his students. This reflection talks about the details about my daily activities, challenges I have faced, and goals for the second term.

During class time, my job is to assist students with any work they are completing. This work is usually homework needing to be completed for other classes, or just extra practice. My day as a peer tutor usually starts off with me roaming the classroom and analysing students. The purpose of this is to provide me with an idea of what I might be helping students with. In most cases, I find a majority of the students usually reading or doing independent work where I am not needed. However, there are a couple of students that require my assistance with homework they receive. This does not mean I

This is very common because of the variety of subjects students work on. One example of this is when one of the students needed help on a math question. This math question asked to find the surface are of a tetrahedral. This was something that I could not remember how to do. To solve this issue, I asked the student if I could quickly browse the internet for the solution and come back to him. Luckily, the learning center class was equipped with computers so I was able to search up the solution and get back to the student within five minutes. A major lesson learned from this was that it is okay to not have a solution to something. If I do not know the answer and cannot help directly with the question, there are other options. From this learning experience so far, I have learned a lot and have come up with future goals for

My junior year in high school, I became a student mentor in our campus’s peer counseling program. This was an incredibly rewarding experience as I had the opportunity to help freshman students assimilate into our high school dynamic. As a peer mentor, I assisted students with personal problems and mediated issues with teachers in order to maximize their learning experience. I also acted as a role model for my mentees by talking frequently about AP and Honors courses and how to be successful in such programs. I put effort into learning about each individual's interests and goals so that I could expose them to clubs and academic courses that they may appreciate such as the Biomedical Academy or our school’s robotics team.…

Most of my friends considered me as an impressive tutor who came with effective tips and tricks. Specifically, I remember a freshman coming to my class saying that he is failing Algebra. Mrs. Coty’s idea of giving the students a chance to share their notes, thoughts, and methods regarding their homework was incredible. It allowed for students to see what was expected of them. Many students skipped the section where they were asked to round and very few drew a picture as they were directed to. By displaying the work of those who did what was asked of them and getting the class to discuss why this was helpful to them allowed for those who did well to feel proud of their accomplishments and those who didn’t to see what they could improve upon for the future. If a student wasn’t very strong on the math and didn’t really understand what they were doing as they did the homework, seeing the class discuss the problems and model the correct solutions as well as the steps to obtain those solutions would strengthen their understanding.…

In being a physics embedded tutor, I have helped a number of students to get a better understanding in the subject. I believe that helping students, regardless of their race, skin color and religious beliefs, will not only help themselves, but help the whole school and community in improving towards a better future. The Ohlone Embedded Tutor Program places a tutor in the classroom under the instructor's guidance to help students understand course concepts and enhance student engagement. I usually committed to full three hours per class session and sometimes provide tutoring support after class or on a different day if it is more agreeable depending on students’ availability and interest. Mostly in class I always offer my perspective of an…

In my peer evaluation, the reader clearly stated the thesis statement, therefore it was a clear statement of the subject and purpose. The reader listed exactly all of my major points in the paper also. One thing that was pointed out in my paper was that contractions were used. Sometimes I get in the habit of just typing fast and forget, so I went through and corrected the few that I messed up on. Other than that, the reader for my peer evaluation obviously did not read through my whole paper, as that was all she said.…

Throughout my first semester of being a writing tutor at the Stony Brook University Writing Center, I have focused on establishing a methodology by which I will lead my writing sessions with students. I have found that the best way for me to tutor is to establish an open, honest dialogue with my students where they are pushed to learn about their writing process. I have found that while I don’t feel comfortable with being compliant to the expectations and actions of my students, I do feel comfortable leading my students to an answer by patiently asking honest, leading questions or answering their questions honestly. Moreover, I am not interested in keeping “writing secrets” from my students; if I have an opinion or critique about their paper,…

When I delivered the teaching session, the experience was an overall success with students showing a clear interest and engaging in the lesson (Table 1, question 10, mean 4.3). The teaching began with a clear introduction to the key learning points for the whole session (Table 1, question 5, mean 4.3), which allowed the students to understand what the session was going to entail. This was beneficial to those who needed to see the big picture to see how topics fit together[1]. I further explained that the session will be split into three sections and explained that certain learning outcomes will be covered in each section. Student feedback stated that there was “enthusiastic teaching in appropriate sized teaching bites.”…

For this artifact that addresses NJPTS #11, I had to complete thirty hours of student observation at the corresponding school at which I was placed. During these observation hours, it was encouraged that I become as actively involved in the classroom as I could, working with both corresponding teachers and students in order to gain meaningful pre-professional experience. Additionally, at the end of my thirty hours, it was required that my corresponding teachers fill out evaluation forms which would assess my professionality during my time spent in their classrooms. Specifically, due to the fact that I treated my corresponding teachers with the utmost respect and viewed students as students and not peers, this artifact is in compliance with…

Introduction The time I spent with my student during our tutoring sessions gave me a first-hand experience of how it is like on a student to teacher level. I learned a lot from my student, Kade, as I hope he also learned from me. During this time, I was able to observe his strengths and his weakness. I had to be flexible to cater my lesson plan to my student, so he could build upon what he learned and advance through more challenging activities.…
