Peer Response Reflection

My previous experiences with peer response have not been as beneficial to me as teachers and myself would hope. In my English 111 class, my professor required the class to do peer responses in class where we had to read your partners paper aloud to him or her and then discuss what you liked/did not like about their paper. This made me very uncomfortable and gave me very little time to give a justified response to someone else's paper, so most of the time I just told my partner that their paper was well written.
For the peer responses we did last week in class I found them to be much more beneficial in the sense that we were able to read another students draft "alone" and actually form an opinion and then fill out the peer response form alone. This gave me much more time to collect my thoughts and really find out what I enjoyed and disliked about the other student's paper. Because I had more time to think about my reaction to the paper I found that it was much easier telling the author how I felt about their paper.

One of my responders really gave me some helpful advice on where my paper was lacking some information and how to better organize my paper, which I think will definitely incorporate throughout my paper. It was also quite evident that she had read through the article I wrote my paper on because throughout her response she was giving me examples of information I could incorporate into my paper. On the other hand, I felt that my second peer responder was harsher in the sense that she was critiquing my style of writing and trying rewrite my paper instead of giving me her opinion on my paper.
Overall, even though I was not satisfied with one of my peer responders editing, I still feel that this peer response experience was beneficial to myself and my writing

There are many challenges that follow enrolling in college classes and with each challenge comes a weight students have to carry for the semester. A few of the weights students have to carry are the college bills, class work, and planning around class time. Students have to be careful not to carry too much or else they will be crushed. A student can think that they signed up for a light load, but after the first day of class discover they signed up for more than they can carry. It can be hard to judge just how heavy something can be; the easiest weight can be misjudged on how hard a college course will be.…

I really appreciated the feedback I would receive from my drafts from Professor Hedge. The draft feedback was always helpful and it guided me in the right direction on what she was looking for in the assignments. Peer workshops sometimes did benefit me but it depended on who my partner was and their interest in my essay. When I was partners with someone who was interest in what I had to say in my essay it helped. Even though my contributions to the intellectual life of the class might have not been the best I believe that they were helpful not only to me but to some of my peers. Specifically in the peer reviews, I felt that those were crucial to the class, because every student had the opportunity to read and analyze another’s paper. By giving helpful criticism to someone else 's paper we were all receiving a new view into the type of essay we needed to be writing, therefore giving our own essays a new point of view to revise with. Consequently, peer reviews helped me learn to communicate better because I really wanted to give constructive criticism that my peers would find helpful towards improving their essays, so that I could also receive some in exchange. For example in the last essay I wrote one of the critics that I had was that one of my paragraphs was all wrong and that it really just did not mean much.…

In an assessment of my ability to give and receive feedback can be found to be challenging at times. I found that you need to give advice that assists in helping the other individual grow in their knowledge base without bringing in our own potential biases. In looking at myself as a whole, I know I may hold different biases that may be different from someone else which may cause potential conflict. I know that it is also important to use identifying areas that are needed to improve and areas in which the individual that you are giving feedback to excel in. I feel during the role play sessions with the use of the peer evaluation form and feedback given during our discussions had assisted me in learning the areas that I would need to work on more and areas that I have excelled.…

If you were to ask me about my high school writing experience, I would tell you that I did not have much experience. We did not have any classes at my school that were specifically writing classes. At my high school, we just had regular English classes where we would occasionally do a few papers in. My English teacher senior year was a great person, but did not necessarily teach us a lot about proper styles of writing papers. Coming into college English, I did not feel well prepared with what to expect for a college level writing class.…

The activity that we did as a class was the peer editing workshop for our papers which help me develop my writing skills. Doing the peer editing workshop helped me understand what errors that needed to be corrected and to hear the negative or positive comments from my peers.
