Peer Mentorship Experience

Improved Essays
Out of the numerous experiences that have shaped my life, from intense political conversations to helping out the high school freshmen for my Peer Mentorship class, I feel the most influential experience in my life is when I began interning at a law clinic. Not only because it helped me determine my career path for my future, but also because it solidified my passion for wanting to help people, especially immigrants/asylum seekers who come from impoverished backgrounds or unfortunate circumstances.

I currently intern at the University of Detroit Mercy George J. Asher Immigration Law Clinic, where I have the opportunity to shadow an attorney and work on cases for individuals who come from destitute households or were brought to the United States

My junior year in high school, I became a student mentor in our campus’s peer counseling program. This was an incredibly rewarding experience as I had the opportunity to help freshman students assimilate into our high school dynamic. As a peer mentor, I assisted students with personal problems and mediated issues with teachers in order to maximize their learning experience. I also acted as a role model for my mentees by talking frequently about AP and Honors courses and how to be successful in such programs. I put effort into learning about each individual's interests and goals so that I could expose them to clubs and academic courses that they may appreciate such as the Biomedical Academy or our school’s robotics team.…

It was a balmy ten o’clock on a Saturday morning in June; the thick air around the Humane Society smelled vaguely of livestock. Stepping into the air-conditioned chill of the shelter, I took a breath, signed in to the volunteer portal, and took my place at the front desk. On this particular day the first people waiting were an older couple, and my heart sank when I saw them. The husband had a bundle in his arms, something wrapped in an old comforter, and I had worked the front desk long enough to know what that meant. Sure enough, as they approached, the blanket shifted and I saw, as I knew I would, the white muzzle and emaciated face of a dog in the decrepit last stages of old age.…

Assisting mentees with issues such as struggling in a class is a vital aspect of the duties of a Peer Mentor. In this scenario, I would consider several possible alternatives to aid my student in getting the help they need in order to succeed. First, I would determine if I could immediately assist the student with any specific material-related issues. While I may not be a TA or tutor for the class, I am an accounting major and could answer any quick or simple problems they may have with an assignment or upcoming exam. However, if they are perpetually struggling and need further assistance, I would utilize the resources at our disposal.…

When I was four years old, I decided that I wanted to be a doctor and everything I did from that day forward was geared towards enhancing myself to be the best physician I could be. After my first year of my undergraduate degree at Michigan State University however, I was terrified to find that science and medicine did not hold the same draw for me as it always had. I found myself with the same passion for changing people’s lives, minus the desire for treating illnesses and researching medical conditions.…

We discussed which courses would be best for me to take next semester and then put them into my planner on my account. I also decided during this meeting to take US history 1302 over the winter mini session. In addition to the winter mini session, I also am planning on taking Math 1314 during the first summer session and then possibly Government 2306 for the second summer session. I decided to take my math class over the summer because I tend to do better in my math classes when I only have to focus on that class.…

A peer mentor is defined as a person who uses their resources to support, encourage and inform someone. Going into this semester, I was unaware that I would be mentoring another student and thus doubted my abilities. Although I was excited to become a mentor, I questioned whether I would truly be able to make a difference in someone’s life. The difference that I wanted to make could be as simple as helping someone ace a test, but the news of mentoring threw me off track. Nonetheless, I gathered myself and tried to maintain a positive attitude.…
