Reflection Journal #2: Clarke County Mentor Program The Clarke County Mentor Program is a mentor program that was established in March of 1991 as a joint initiative of the Athens Clarke County School District and the Athens Area Chamber of Commerce in order to provide mentors to local students between grades K-12. The program allows mentors to visit mentees during the school hours for about one hour, once a week, for at least an entire year. The mentors are not encouraged to provide academic support but be a genuine adult for the youth to have a stable, caring adult in the life of the child other than their parent or guardian. Consumers for the Therapeutic Mentoring program will be identified and recruited through referrals from Ford Elementary School in St. Louis City. Teachers, counselors, administrators and parents will refer students to the Mentor Coordinator (MC). The MC will appropriately pair the TM and the youth. Especially at a school where there may not be enough resources to adequately assist them, this leaves many new teachers to fend for themselves. In my peer evaluation, the reader clearly stated the thesis statement, therefore it was a clear statement of the subject and purpose. The reader listed exactly all of my major points in the paper also. One thing that was pointed out in my paper was that contractions were used. Sometimes I get in the habit of just typing fast and forget, so I went through and corrected the few that I messed up on. Instead of rushing headlong into a paper and writing it all in one sitting, working through the writing process actually forced me to stop and thoroughly read every source to find what information I agreed/disagreed with. Pre-writing helped to pinpoint what my beliefs/ideas were in both the personal culture paper as well as the quote-directed paper. Peer review and tutoring really helped to improve the conciseness of my papers, drawing all my thoughts and ideas into clear, cohesive paragraphs that flowed smoothly from one to the next. My peers and my tutor also picked out errors that I tended to overlook; they were unbiased and were able to point out errors such as awkward wording and incorrect punctuation. I know now that a paper cannot be written all in one sitting.…
I originally thought that by just being there for someone you were a mentor. I now know through this program that mentoring involves giving both tools and advice to effectively help your mentee. The relationship with a mentee is somewhat different than a relationship between friends. There is a sort of bond that occurs from helping the student but the student holds you to higher standards than a friend would. I am excited about mentoring next semester because I want to hone my mentoring skills even further be able to help my mentees in a more effective way.…
