The use of children for sexual objects of desire can be traced back to Ancient Greece. Minors were often used for adults’ sexual satisfaction, which was a tolerated and prized costume. It was most common between men and young boys. The word pedophile stems from the Greek words paidos, meaning child, and philia, meaning love (Pedophilia). The fantasy or act of sexual activity with prepubescent children is defined as pedophilia (Psychology Today). Pedophilia is considered a paraphilia, which is an, “abnormal sexual desire”. Pedophilia is the most common paraphilia. Pedophiles are people who experience fantasies about children and act upon their sexual desires. Society feels that if you want to be with children in an intimate way, especially if you act upon those feelings you should be locked away in a jail cell, some even feel the perpetrator should be castrated. In the twentieth century parents have become more vigilant of who they allow into their children’s lives. However, children today are still susceptible to pedophiles through technology and social media. With todays’ technology, children have access to chatrooms, social networks, and webcams, that allow pedophiles to stimulate their sexual fantasies about children. Although, some studies suggest the disorder runs in families, it is not known whether it is learned behavior or genetic. Some studies also suggest pedophiles sexual interests are related to brain structure, and that some of the differences in structure existed before birth (Dreger). Sexual acts often include oral sex or the touching of genitals of the child or the offender (Psychology today). Some pedophiles intent is to stimulate the child, stimulate oneself, or have intercourse with the child (Pedophilia). According to Alfred C. Kinsey, an Indiana University zoologist, he concluded that boys who were sexually molested, despite their horrifying reactions, enjoyed being stimulated manually and orally by pedophiles (Knight). If a child who has been sexually molested is simulated by any sexual touching that does not mean they enjoy the act, and does not justify a perpetrators’ actions.
