In my neighborhood, there had been a convicted child molester living right across the street from me. One day when my brother and I were outside, we noticed a garage sale across the street at the old man’s house. Without giving it a second thought, we walked over and bought some of the products he was selling. The next day we had the police knock on our door asking if we had seen the man from across the street, he proceeds to tell us that the man had been convicted of child molestation, and now he had been put out on parole. The man had sexually molested 5 other children since being let out the first time, breaking his parole regulations. Our family was shocked, we never had a clue that a child molester would be just in walking distance of …show more content…
To be diagnosed with pedophilia, a person must be sexually aroused by children 13 years old and younger, be involved with a child for at least six months; be at least 16 years old, and be at least five years older than the child or children he or she is attracted to.( “Child Molestation Research & Prevention Institute”). When someone with pedophilia is tested, the results will show positive for a sexual interest in children because, they have recurrent sexual fantasies, sexual urges or they have sexually touched a child because of an ongoing sexual drive toward children. Not everyone with pedophilia has sexually touched a child, for some it is only a fantasy (“Child…”). On the other hand; to be classified as a child molester, one has to sexually touch a child. When tested, results will show that they do not have any sexual interest in children, if they sexually touched a child, it was because they were; a sexually curious older child, suffer from a mental or medical condition, or are antisocial and do not care about using people(“Child…”). The only way to be considered a child molester is to actually act upon impulse while on the other hand, a pedophile only has the fantasy of having sex with children.
