Pedophiles: The Most Hated Population In Prison

Improved Essays
There are quite a few reasons to believe pedophiles are the most hated population in prison. One can be that most pedophiles are not accustomed to harsh, violent backgrounds that other criminals, especially murderers, are prone to. Most pedophiles are actually people who have received an education, have well-to-do jobs and have families of their own. They usually lack a criminal record, especially one of violence, until he or she is found out and brought to justice. Therefore, when a pedophile enters prison he or she may stand out amongst the other criminals making him or her an easy target for prison violence. However, the more obvious reasons that pedophiles are the most hated prison population stems from the fact that “they hurt children”.

As with many social problems, the question of labeling a sex offender on a national registry is met with many different options. The first of which is that pedophilia is a mental disease rather that some criminal decision. The passage “The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders defines pedophilia as an intense and recurrent sexual interest in prepubescent children, and a disorder if it causes a person ‘marked distress or interpersonal difficulty’ or if the person acts on his interests,” shows that this is actually a mental illness and not a choice. Pedophiles all around the world are being treated poorly just because of a disease they have. They are treated so poorly that they could be prohibited from different types of job opportunities and even educational opportunities. An example given in the article is about HIV and AIDS.…

Deceitful, cunning, narcissistic, irresponsible, superficially charming, taking needless risks, and displaying little empathy, psychopaths are individuals prone to criminal lifestyles and high recidivism rates. Psychopaths’ criminality and recidivism account for why a fifth of inmates are psychopaths. Although prisons attempt to rehabilitate inmates, psychopaths pose a difficult problem for legal sentencing and rehabilitation: a psychopath’s brain functions differently than the average brain, and because psychopaths don’t process information normally, they can legally plea diminished capacity. Moreover, they are difficult to rehabilitate, because of their abnormal brain anatomy. Unfortunately, an even more pressing issue exists.…
