Pediatric Surgery Career

“Paging Dr. Keeler to the OR, stat” blasts across the intercom and I run down the hall dressed in scrubs. My heart is racing and I know it’s going to be a long night. Rewind the clock 20 years; I will share my story. Well into my 8th grade year, I began to think about my future. In five years I will be at Virginia Tech starting my Bachelors degrees. After four years, I will continue at the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine and Research Institute studying to become a surgeon. This along with my residency will take me 10 years to complete. This long journey will help me to accomplish my goal of becoming a pediatric surgeon so I can help children who are sick. There are many reasons I want to become a surgeon, here are a few. When I was almost six my sister was born, and of course we went to the hospital. Ever since then I have been intrigued with the hospital and the people who work there. Also contributing to my interest in becoming a surgeon was my grandfather being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2014. This time commitment could consume your whole life! Believe it or not, my time in high school will contribute to my education plan to becoming a surgeon. First, I plan to graduate with honors, obtaining an advanced diploma from Midlothian High School that enable me to apply to Virginia Tech. I will get a Bachelor’s of Science degree from my studies at Virginia Tech and then I will go on to their medical school. These requirements will take me 12 years. Although this is a lengthy amount of time, it will allow me to move to my residency. I would like to complete my residency at a hospital on the East Coast, close to home. All in all, this is an extremely long amount of time, but I know I can do
