Personal Statement

“Children are the key to a nation’s future and its best hope.” said one of my high school teachers. As I look back today and think of these words, it seems a reality. And, yes, a pediatrician truly holds the key to safeguard this “hope” by doing early intervention, prevention and treatment of pediatric diseases.

My association with pediatrics is from my childhood days. I would often interrupt my mother during her labor room calls and would often ask my father various questions during his resuscitation calls, ward rounds and OPD visits. This association grew further day by day during my medical school days but I made the final decision to pursue pediatrics in 2005 when I was posted in pediatric emergency clinical

During my residency, I learned diagnosis and basic management of common and uncommon pediatric diseases like birth asphyxia, hypoglycemia, respiratory distress, epilepsy, gastroenteritis, meningitis etc. It was also an ambrosial opportunity to see rare conditions such as Colliodion baby, ectodermal dysplasia, Lobster Claw deformity and bilateral elbow neurofibromatosis, few of the interesting cases that I later presented in the National Conferences and published few of these. I also learned and assisted arterial, venous samplings, cannulation, lumbar puncture, central vein catheterization, pleural aspiration and cardio-pulmonary resuscitations including endotracheal intubation during my …show more content…
I am learning further about the patient care system in USA, new medicines used and not the least the United States medical health care system. This opportunity has grafted my preparedness for the US medical system. This is immensely beneficial and gratifying as I am using my clinical training from medical school, residency and applying those concepts to pediatric practice in USA and vice versa. Besides learning management of diseases, I also value the opportunity to talk to children, their families, about their lives, their culture and beliefs. These experiences are certainly enriching my interpersonal and communication skills. I would further like to enhance my skills and learn international level of pediatric care practice by pursuing residency in USA in your

My Interest in the medical field all began when I was a young girl, growing up I always was fascinated by science and the human anatomy, and how each complex system made this one being. In school, I struggled with subjects such as reading and writing, but when it came to math and science it became a second language, figured it was mostly because of my curiosity and for passion learning, but what influenced me the most as a child was my mother. My mother is a Social Worker and she has to help and support people on daily bases and by watching her example giving to people out of the kindness of her heart back into the community, made me want to do the same and growing up in Christian home I was told that “God gives us gifts and talents so we can help and support his people,” and so I thought what better way to serve people then becoming a doctor; with these skills and…

As the daughter of a pediatrician, the medical field has surrounded me my entire life. However, my familiarity with the details of medicine expanded at age 15 when I began to volunteer at the C.A.R.E. Clinic, which provides medical care for the uninsured. My internship at a medical examiner’s office exposed me to the anatomy and physiology of the human body and the medical causes of death. In college, I explored medicine by volunteering in the emergency department at Children’s Hospital and Clinics of Minnesota in St. Paul and participated in a Global Medical Brigades trip to rural Honduras. In addition, I spent time shadowing physicians in a variety of specialties, including orthopedics, internal…

At the time, my mum took me to the hospital when it was time for my annual physical exam and immunization. For some reason I liked the way the doctor interacted with me and my mum. There was something special about how the health care staff interacted with us in a compassionate way. That has stuck in my in my head ever since then. February 2012 was one of the lowest points of my life, but it was also one of the highest points as well. During this time, I was in LeBonheur’s Children Hospital on the verge of death. I could not hold down any type of food or drink, I could barely stand without my parents’ help, I could not shower, I was passing blood in my stool, I had to wear pull-ups, and I could not use the bathroom on my own. Every day was the same routine with same inconsiderate people that never took my feelings into consideration. I felt like no one cared about me other than my parents, but one day that changed due to one person, my pediatrician. Whenever he came to see me, he would always have a smile on his face, tell me that I looked like a “beauty queen”, and asked me how I felt. I was so excited for his visits because they were the highlight of my day. This experience led me to one of the highest points of my life, which was determining my career, a pediatrician. I did not know much about what it took to be a pediatrician, so I decided to look it up. I began my search on a website known as Mississippi Choices, continued onto another website called Occupational Outlook Handbook, and I finished my search by…

As kids growing up you were asked the same question over and over, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” Kids reply princess, astronaut, dancer, teacher, etc. and occasionally you have that one who just says they want to do nothing, but play video games. Nevertheless, the answer is simply I do not know or I have not thought about it. Personally, growing up I wished to become a doctor, not just any doctor, a pediatrician. Working with children is something I am passionate about. What better career choice is being able to work with children and to do something that had my interest in mind, the medical field. That in my head is good work. Good work is being able to work with children. To nurture them back to normal health and send them away…

To complete this paper, I had the honor of interviewing Dr. Wheaton. She is a pediatric physician at Kaiser Permanente in Hayward. I have always wanted to be a physician and since I love working with kids, I thought interviewing a pediatric physician would be very beneficial because it would give me a lot of insight on a career that I might pursue in the future. Since I volunteer at a hospital, I asked my supervisor if she knows a doctor who would give me few hours of his/her time. She gave me five names and I did a little research on each one of them and I found Dr. Wheaton to be the best fit. Luckily, I found her email address (it is almost impossible to find a doctor’s personal email) and I asked if she would interview with me. I must admit, personally contacting a busy physician is really hard. She agreed and…
