Pediatric Nursing is a specialized field of nursing that works with children from infancy through the late teen years. There are many requirements in order to get this specialized degree, and it takes dedication to your schooling to receive it. Being a Pediatric Nurse gives you lots of flexibilities of where you would like to work and the salary will reflect on the location in which you choose to work. It can be highly rewarding to watch kids grow up from infants until they leave for college. At the same time it can be devastating if one of your patient’s is diagnosed with a terminal illness. You have to have compassion but you also have to have the ability to separate your emotions. You also have to be able to provide emotional support during these difficult and emotional times for the patient’s families. Pediatric Nursing is not for everyone; you have to really love children to succeed in this career. Everyday is different just as every situation is different. Children can pick up subtle cues, if they think that you are upset, sad, or frustrated they will be sad, frustrated, and upset. So you have to remain calm and positive no matter what the situation is. Communication is something that a nurse needs to have because they have to listen to help keep the patient and family member calm. The nurse needs to listen to the doctor’s instruction, so they can clearly communicate this to the family. There are many qualities a Pediatric Nurse may need to posses, they need to have Critical-Thinking Skills, Compassion, Attention to Detail, Organizational Skills, Calm Under Pressure, Patience, and Communication Skills according to
