Pediatric Nursing Certification Board Paper

Nationally, nursing organizations and associations total over one hundred; increasing when factoring in international organizations (Matthews, 2012). I am currently a certified pediatric nurse (CPN). I was certified through the Pediatric Nursing Certification Board (PNCB). I have held my CPN certification for two years. PNCB is a nursing organization that certifies pediatric nurses and pediatric nurse practitioners (PNP) in acute and primary care settings. PNCB was started in 1975 and has continued to grow and expand over the last few decades. PNCB, like any professional organization, has a mission, vision, and values. The mission is to provide the highest quality certification services for nurses that work with pediatric patients (PNCB, 2016). The vision of PNCB is that every child should be cared for by a nurse certified by PNCB (PNCB, 2016). The values of PNCB include: integrity, quality, innovation, advocacy, and respect (PNCB, 2016). The organization partners with different health systems. For example, my hospital offers the CPN test free of charge to nurses who work within the organization. The hospital is able to do this by taking advantage of the no pass, no pay program that PNCB offers. PNCB has a board of directors that include: one public member, one pediatrician, and the rest of the board is made up of pediatric nurse practitioners (PNP) and pediatric nurses. At this time, I have no interest in pursuing any leadership role. I still have over a year until I complete my degree and I think it would be too much to take on something else. I also want to obtain a post-master’s certificate in PNP- primary care. I think having this would provide me with a better opportunity to become further involved in PNCB. Eventually I will get to a leadership role, but not at this
