Pediatric Nurse Scholarship Essay

Counseling was never something that I ever intended to go into. Ever since I was little I wanted to be a pediatric nurse. My family has many people who are in the medical field so I always had the idea that I would eventually follow in there footsteps. It was when I was 12 that my plan changed and I started to think that counseling could be something I would enjoy. As a 12 year old I was diagnosed with depression as well as ADHD and had trouble fitting in with my peers at school. The only thing that made me feel like I was part of something was when I would go for my horse riding lesson with week. For me this was more effective than any therapy that I had tried before. When I was 16 I became interested more in the relationship that I had …show more content…
I think that these issues and problems have made me stronger and have also helped to develop my goal to become a counselor. When I was in college I had an internship at a drug rehab for adolescents. I learned not only how to be more empathetic but I also learned how to better communicate with clients who are battling drug addictions. One thing that I think really impacted me there was hearing the many stories of the adolescents and how they just wanted to change and be better individuals. Another place I interned was at a relief nursery for kids who are in low income families and had behavioral problems. During this internship I was able to work in the classrooms with the kids but I was also able to accompany the teachers on home visits to the child’s house. The home visits where a good time for me to improve my communication skills and to understand more about the child’s background. For me I enjoyed seeing the parents apply new concepts to there parenting styles and see the children make

Reaching adolescence I experienced my first episode of mania at age 14 and was later diagnosed with bipolar disorder at age 15. At age 21 I became involved with a severely psychological abusive partner for four years, which damaged my self-esteem, took away my voice, and sense of self. I then married an even more abusive man at age 25 and divorced at 26, which resulted in PTSD. I then entered an intensive outpatient DBT (dialectical behavior therapy) program which has helped extensively. I rediscovered who I was, what I wanted, my passions, developed coping strategies in emotional regulation, and discovered how to stand up for myself and that I wasn’t selfish for not conforming to what everyone else wanted me to.…

I also assisted with child abuse and neglect investigations (CAN), intake, individualized service plans (ISPs), comprehensive family assessments (CFAs), entered data into Family, Adult, and Child Tracking System (FACTS), and continued to monitor the families I serve through home visitations. My favorite part of the internship experience outside of increasing the morale around the office, has been to work with families through the ISP process. This process is put in place in efforts to reunify the family. It gives me great joy to watch the family work on a plan to help them gain custody of their children.…

Even though I became very secluded and self-conscious, I now view that as a defense mechanism that helped me when I was approached by the people who had treated me so wrong. Instead of letting these events affect me negatively, I found ways that I could use my experiences to help others that may be going through the same thing. I joined a leadership group my sophomore year in high school, where I was able to speak about my difficulties and be a mentor to other kids who may be going through something similar to what I experienced. Through speaking about my story and helping others, I saw the positive side of my situation and how it made me the person I am today. Although I would have never dreamed of going through something like this, my struggle made me a stronger person and taught me how to deal with difficult people who may have a specific view of me or my family.…
