Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Essay

From a young age, I could remember that infamous question, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” I wasn’t your typical little girl who’d just want to be a princess or a fairy, I always wanted to be something in the medical field with the exception of wanting to be a chef. I’ve bounced around from wanting to be an ultrasound tech, to a dermatologist and finally came to the conclusion that I want to be a pediatric nurse practitioner (PNP). I’ve always enjoyed working with children and the medical aspect of it has always intrigued me as well. Here is why I want to major in nursing. Nurse practitioners (NPs) are advance practiced registered nurses (APRNs) who often focus on specific areas or populations that include pediatrics, women’s health, geriatrics, and also mental health. Their specialized education and clinical training allow them to perform task that RNs aren’t licensed to do. Nurse practitioners may also complete an advanced degree program that allows them to practice independently and take on the role of a doctor. Prior to writing this paper, I still didn’t know what I wanted to do, but I had an idea. As I looked more into the nursing field, I started looking at all the things you could specialize in. I knew that because of my past jobs working with children and also working within the medical field, this would be the right career path for me. I’m basically combining what I know now and furthering my knowledge of it. I know that I have potential to obtain something higher than just being a registered nurse. The people that I’ve talked to and the articles that I’ve read about being a pediatric nurse practitioner has helped me pin point exactly what I would like to do with my life and I couldn’t be any happier to get started with my
