The most recent literature review of pediatric evidence based design research is from 2005. In the review of the literature to date, the authors found that much of the research focused on nature, noise levels, music and healing gardens (Sherman, Shepley and Varni). A theme that comes up often within each of these categories is “control.” Playing music to soothe anxiety, or dimming the lights to aid in sleep, provides specific benefits to the patient’s wellbeing. Less obvious but equally important is feeling a sense of control. Patients in the hospital experience feeling a loss of control and the opportunity to choose the music or decide when to dim the lights, gives these patients some control over their environment.
