I grew up the same way any other boy would; I went to the pool with friends; I played every sport possible; and I loved everything about myself. Then the questions started coming. “What is wrong with you? Why does your chest look so weird?” Whenever I had my shirt off I appeared to be a different person. At the pool I turned heads as I walked around, playing sports I shocked teammates when I changed my shirt, and eventually I even began to ask myself what was wrong with me. I learned that I have Pectus Excavatum which is a deformity of the chest. If you had asked any of my peers for a description of who I am, they would have said that I was someone who was shy, and possibly even a bit awkward. This was a personality trait that I had been struggling with throughout the majority of my life. I had grown up as an only child, incessantly feeling out of place among my peers. It wasn’t until the middle of my freshman year of high school that I gained the self-confidence I had only dreamed about.…

The ever-present issue of performing any type of cosmetic surgery on patients who suffer from the mental illness known as body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is often a problem in the medical, psychiatric and legal fields. The perspectives and professional judgments of practitioners in these three sectors have the possibility to inevitably cause conflict, based on their experience, training, and levels of risk. Creating policies and procedures for determining whether and when BDD is illogicality to ethical practices and cosmetic surgery is always in question and even more apparent in teens and adolescents. It’s important to recognize and accurately diagnose BDD, because this illness is often mistaken for other illnesses and disorders. It’s imperative…

The following essay will focus on the disease known as Muscular Dystrophy and how it affects the overall state of human growth and development ranging from preconception genetics to the complexities of its negative psychological impact it has on its unfortunate victims. Tim Newman, from the University of Illinois-Chicago (2017), states “Muscular dystrophy is a muscle-wasting disease whose predominant forms may affect up to 1 in every 5,000 males.” Muscular Dystrophy, otherwise known as MD, can also occur in females, and usually arises early in adolescence. The contribution of genes and their environments are detrimental to how muscular dystrophy is acquired. Causes of muscular dystrophy are genetically linked to the X chromosome being inherited…

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) provides a plethora of disorders that can be critiqued. However, in this paper I will discuss body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) along with a focus on Muscle Dysphoria (MD). The DSM-V publication defines body dysmorphic disorder in the same fashion as the previous DSM- IV edition. However, delusional variants of the disorder are no longer coded as both delusional disorder, somatic type, and body dysmorphic disorder; in the DSM-V publication, it is classified only as body dysmorphic disorder with the absent insight/delusional beliefs specifier (American Psychological Association [APA], 2013). Additionally, the DSM-V includes a “with muscle dysmorphia” specifier, which has been added…

“I had always been proud of my body—its strength and grace enabled me to pursue my passions. But now it had become the enemy” (Bried). This is ballet, a wonderful but exhausting, beautiful but horrible art form and sport, and the ones who make the magic happen are the ballerinas. Onstage, they look stunning, all lean muscles and long lines and lovely faces, but backstage and beyond, it’s a different, gruesome story. The ballerina’s body takes a regular beating, every day, and though dancers are true athletes, it is hard for their bodies to keep up with their punishing daily regimen.…

A normal day without feminism... the thought alone frightens me. The most important acts in the past made my life today much easier. We don’t have true equality yet, but the civil rights and feminist movement made things much easier for me to live in this day and age as a black woman. If the feminist movement never happened, I believe I would gain a few simplistic things, I also believe there would be a lot of suffering that would go along with those benefits.…

I could feel the silent judging piercing into my skin the moment my fifth doctor this month strode into the room. Smiling broadly with her gleaming straight teeth, the doctor gave me the "once over" and began to run through her typical set of clinical examination questions. "Are you pregnant," she succinctly asked. To her, this question was a mere routine. To me, however, the question still pulled me back to some of my most taunting nightmares.…

The last time I truly felt content in my life was when I was in elementary school, before the media implanted this idea of “perfection” in my mind, before I was seen as a geek, before the sole thing that mattered was the number of someone’s followers on Instagram, before I was objectified, before I hated myself. How did I not apprehend this before? Through all of these years, I solely wanted to fit in, but why? Why would I want to suffocate my personality" just to be another face in a sea of stereotypes and uniformity? The friendships I had cultivated and all the things I had done were done under the guise of self-hate, judgment, a prolific persona, a girl who so wrongly desired to be just another face among the faces.…

When entering junior high, we were constantly reminded by teachers, parents, and school administrators how different it was from elementary school. It was supposed to be the start of a transition from childhood to young adulthood, and though I discounted many of these sentiments at the time, looking back it certainly was. In an instant, it seemed, everyone started swearing and the hallways began to smell of a putrid mixture of not enough or too much cologne. For the first time we had to change before gym, no one really sure whether it was more socially acceptable to change in a bathroom stall or feign confidence by doing it out in the open. Talk swirled of who got their periods, who was wearing what bra size, and which boys needed to stop cultivating…
