Pebbles Around A Hole Analysis

The artwork I choose is Pebbles around a Hole. The artist is Andy Goldsworthy. He was born in Britain in 1956. He created Pebbles around a Hole in 1987. The medium used is chromogenic print. The size is 65.5 x 67 cm. The location is unknown.
The subject matter is an eye. The black hole is the pupil and the colored rings around it are the colored parts of the eye. I see it as an eye looking at us while we do not know what could possibly be looking back at us. The eye could also be looking deep into our souls. Which is why the hole is completely dark. It could also be the eye of the universe. The hole in the center of the universe and it never ends. Which is another reason why the hole appears to be dark. The lines are in the pebbles and the changes of the colors leading down to the focal area which is the hole. The color is most important. The dominant color used is the blackness of the hole. The colors used are analogous. The dark blue and the blue/grey pebbles; the grey pebbles and the white pebbles, and the black of the hole. The pattern is the repetition of the pebbles going around in a circle. The shape helps the rhythm because of the repetition of the pebbles. The predominate light value is balanced between light and dark. The light value transitions are gently modulated. The contrast is created through value and color. The contrast of the dark hole and the white pebbles around it. The colors descending from dark to light and then back to the darkness of the hole. The darkness of the hole is emphasized because of the white pebbles around it. The texture is in the pebbles as well the dirt and sand it was created on. The texture of the pebbles are smooth.
