It was difficult for me to process how a person can disregard the earth it by tarnishing it with trash. On this day, a small seed of passion for the environment was planted.
With age, this passion grew into a responsibility. I wanted to help the earth. I joined Peacejam and learned about composting waste, gardening, food ethics, and the work of Nobel Peace Prize winners. I received a plethora of new opportunities such as teaching elementary school kids about water ethics and recognizing emotions and I experience the Dalai Lama live. I was successful in this club, yet I did not make my full transition to adulthood until my senior year when I was voted in as leader of our chapter. I changed how I viewed myself as a member of the club. Previously, I had directions given to me on what actions to take. Now, I was no longer a follower, but a leader. The first action I took was to set up marketing for our club. Through announcements, posters, and representation at assemblies, our environmental club grew from 25 to 80 people.
