It is literally an example of Civil Disobedience producing a new, idealistic society. The founding fathers of this country believed that citizens have the right to petition and change their government if it was not meeting their fundamental needs (in other words, this country was built on the idea of consent of the governed (2)). In 2013, Edward Snowden uploaded classified information from the United States government onto the internet. The documents highlighted the extent to which the government was gathering information from the public without having warrants or a reason linking them to terrorism. This act has condemned Snowden as a traitor to the United States. Nonetheless, it brought public attention to the activities of the government that could be considered unconstitutional as well as a breach of privacy and trust. It is imperative that citizens hold the government accountable and many consider Snowden’s actions heroic. Overall, there needs to be a balance within society and government between the needs of the people and the need for order. Nonetheless, civil disobedience is not law-breaking, it is law changing. Cases of civil disobedience, particularly the ones on a massive scale, are entirely justified, especially in the original context of the constitution. It is the fundamental right of the people to change government if it is infringing upon their rights.
