Peaceful Resistance During The Civil Rights Movement

With what is going on in the United States currently, peaceful resistance is something we see every day. Peaceful resistance can be shown in many ways, not just civil disobedience. One of the most successful forms of peaceful resistance is that of protesting. Things such as President Donald Trump's so-called immigration ban, have triggered an era of peaceful resistance. CNN reported of several airports being affected including, "Los Angeles, San Francisco, Washington, Dallas, New York's JFK, Raleigh, Houston, Seattle, Portland, Atlanta and more." Inside these airports we saw many people carrying, what is reported as, "thousands of colorful handmade signs..." to protest the travel ban. For example, during the civil rights movement, it was relatively unknown the oppression African Americans faced. Once the peaceful resistance started, led by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., change began to happen. This does not only impact free society by allowing for change. Peaceful resistance also helps to create and expand ideas and opinions. Without any form of peaceful resistance a free society would be one of conformity in which, everyone believed the same thing that they are told to believe. In instances such as this, we see no freedom of opinion or expression. The civil rights movement gave a prime example of how peaceful resistance can bring about new ideas. Before the civil rights movement, the idea was one of inequality. However, in today's free society we see equality in everyone no matter the race, color, gender, or political views of a person. Not only does peaceful resistance change ideas in this way, it can also change or create new ways of doing tasks.
