In a time where America is undergoing so much transition to a new presidency, we are witnessing a substantial increase in civil disobedience to the new laws and sanctions being put in place by the new president. While there have been some outburst of unnecessary violence and unrest, most of the resistance has been peaceful in nature. The question we have to ask ourselves is whether peacefully protest laws we see unjust beneficial to our society and the manner in which we govern it. I affirm that peaceful protest is beneficial to those who want to refute a law that they do not agree with. I beleive movements like the March for Life and other peaceful protests are very powerful and speak volumes of what the people want. The American government …show more content…
In regard to whether peaceful protest has any substantial effect on our government or the way the country runs, just look to Martin Luther King and the Civil Rights movement. King preached that the movement had to be peaceful and that there could be no other way. The people in the South that supported the movement were harassed, arrested, and treated very unkind by the government. They willingly accepted the consequences for they understood the long term effect would be greater and more substantial than the present. A modern day example is the March for Life in Washington, DC every year in an effort to overturn the Roe vs. Wade decision that made abortion legal. I believe this positively affects our society because, as a supporter, I believe there is no harm in standing up for your beliefs in a peaceful manner. In doing so, citizens of the United States participate in the freedom of speech granted to them by the government. Being active in politics and government, especially for the youth, is a very good sign of engagement and interest in what is happening in our country. Without any struggle there can be no gain so protesting in a peaceful way may take longer and aggravate some members of society, but as long as it

Throughout history and even to the present day, the government has made laws that didn’t always please everyone. Laws, taxes, tariffs, bans, they were all created to place boundaries on citizens and even government officials. Some historical court cases violated the rights that citizens obtained in the bill of rights and the constitution. Peaceful resistance, in my opinion, benefits the society more than it causes disruptions.…

Does peaceful resistance to laws positively or negatively impact a free society? I believe a good example for this topic is “Letter from a Birmingham Jail- Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.” Mr. King believed in a peaceful and non-violent movement to change the wrongs of society. This is an issue where many people hold differing opinions.…

Peacefully resisting a national law impacts a free society, but depending on the situation, it can be a positive or a negative impact. In "Civil Disobedience" by Henry David Thoreau, he expresses his belief that "government is best when governs least". That is a hard concept to follow, though, considering many citizens of the U.S struggle to conform to the laws we have currently. I would agree that a limited government is extremely necessary, but to have no rules at all is dangerous. If I were to turn on the news at this moment, I would see thousands of protesters against President-Elect Donald Trump.…

In response to Donald Trump’s inauguration as the forty-fifth president of the United States, the Women’s March was a powerful demonstration of peaceful resistance to what protesters believed was an assault on their freedoms. People of all religious, economic, and racial backgrounds rallied together to express their dissatisfaction with the incumbent president. In the streets of cities throughout America, people marched for their rights. This march was only one in the long history of public protests, both legal and illegal, in the United States, the largest “free society” in the world. Resistance to laws, in the form of civil disobedience and authorized public displays, can positively affect a free society.…

I believe that peaceful resistance to laws is a positive impact on a free society. America was founded on the principles of freedom of speech and the ability to speak out against injustice. While peaceful resistance If civil disobedience was a negative thing heroes such as rosa parks or Martin Luther KIng would have never accomplished there goals. The act of peaceful resistance not only enforces the right to protest but it also helps to kickstart change without the need for violence. One should note that it takes much more courage and strength of character to peacefully protest than resort to more crude methods.…

It is my view that peaceful resistance to laws positively impacts a free society, if those laws or the government enforcing them are believed to be unjust. In any true democracy, the people have a right, and an obligation, to rebel against an unjust government. As Harris G. Mirkin has written, “The Declaration of Independence, a document that Jefferson claimed was merely an ‘expression of the American mind,’ declared that it was the ‘Right of the people to alter or abolish’ any government, and institute a new one that would better secure their safety and happiness.” While rebellion in any form should not be the first choice, it is occasionally the only choice. The same principles that apply to a revolutionary rebellion also apply to a peaceful…

Peaceful resistance to laws positively impacts a free society as it promotes the creation and the retention of a free country. Free societies are often considered more advanced than the oppressive ones because freedom is something that evolved out of oppression. Now, in the modern world, governments are more or less established, and for them to be changed, the people must act. Civil disobedience is woven through the fabric of the United States. The Revolutionary war granted the underdog colonies independence-- not just independence but freedom.…

The peaceful protests that have been portrayed over the past century have had a more negative effect due to the violence the police and everyone opposed the protest. The idea that our nation is so against everyone that when we scream the issue no one hears but when we are attacked suddenly everyone wants to help but the only way to help is to be strong against the issues. To be peaceful and demand the change we so desperately need in order to get through our let downs as a country. There is a sense of fear that has been drilled in our nations mind. Moving forward past the horrors, past the destruction, past the violence, the attacks, the deaths, move past it all and you have a country so big yet frail.…

However, there are other, simpler alternatives to protesting than unlawful resistance. In the First Amendment of the Bill of Rights, it is stated that the people have the Freedom of Speech and the right “to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.” In other words, there seems to be no point in causing chaos in a society by disobeying the established laws.…

Robert O’Connor Concord High School New Hampshire Like many things in life, civil disobedience, is all a matter of perspective. Whether it be the Great Muhammad Ali peacefully opposing his selection for the draft or Rosa Parks literally sitting down instead of standing up for what is right on a bus ride home, each and every case of civil disobedience has its ups and downs. Though, when talking about basic human rights, there is no room to be neutral, and that is why peaceful resistance to laws most certainly impacts a society positively. From an optimistic perspective, everything will be alright in the end. Despite Ali’s…

Peaceful resistance to laws positively impacts a free society because it encourages other people to express their thoughts, it helps people fight against injustice, and it also can lead to bad laws being changed. First, peaceful resistance to laws encourages other people to express their thoughts. There were many examples where a few protesters grew into many, including a recent example in my country Guatemala. According to an article on CNN.com, a few people started the protest and then, “There were college students and teachers. There were also union workers and peasants.…
