“Faith brought this about. Faith, as Dad saw it, had delivered unto us the Airstream trailer, and faith would direct our travels.” (Enger, 130). Jeremiah had a very strong faith throughout this entire novel and always seemed to be praying or performing miracles. The moment that stood out the most to me was when Jeremiah and Reuben went to church and Jeremiah had an ‘incident’. “He looked exactly like he did on the odd sleep-late Saturday morning when he’d worked long at school the night before: appreciative, vaguely surprised, and above all unconscious.” (Enger, 33). At this point in the story, Jeremiah had no known health issues that would’ve caused him to become unconscious, so through the setting in the church we know that faith is what caused this ‘incident’. Jeremiah has been very faithful to God through miracles, his family, and his moral characteristics. He is choosing the best decision based on the needs of others and following God’s callings. God called him to make the sacrifices that he made for the trip and act kindly to a man who fired him in front of his own
