In the book Peace like a River how hands are described represent the characters souls. How the hands are described can tell us as the readers what type of soul or personality the character has. Reuben describes Roxana's hands as looking like they have done hard work. On page 179 he says “Roxanna Crawley was standing there looking thirsty; did I mention her knuckles before? This woman had worked.” This could mean that Roxanna has a soul that has drive and determination to get things done, but since she is a motherly figure to the kids she also has this nice soft side to her.
Hands are found throughout the whole book. On page 302 Reuben is describing Jeremiah's hands and arms after Jeremiah and Reuben are shot.
