I grew up in a small, rural community in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. Recently I returned to visit my high school where I saw my former band director. He asked me an interesting question; one I had never been asked before, “What is the most important thing you have learned from your experiences?” Without dwelling on the question much I replied, “People are more similar than they are different.” I surprised myself with this blunt statement that streamed out of my mouth. After reflecting, I believe this realization came so easily as this is a core part of my teaching philosophy: We all have so much in common and in finding those we can become fantastic educators and excellent students.
My primary career goal is to work with educators around the

After university I was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Kenya where I taught in two local schools, facilitated adult teambuilding/leadership training, worked on youth malaria education, facilitated HIV/AIDS education, taught life skills, coached youth sports and much more. I loved my time in Peace Corps and not a day passes where I don’t think about my friends, my students, my host families and my fellow teachers. When I joined I thought of Peace Corps as pause from “normal” life, which would resume, upon my completion. Little did I know that my life would be forever changed and after returning this has fueled my drive to use education as the medium to be the change I wish to see in the …show more content…
After gaining some experience I see myself developing my own programs, pursuing my doctorate, and going to places where the need is greatest. Since attending Spelman College, I have evolved as a person mentally and socially, especially in my efforts regarding volunteering and the production of social change. Before attending Spelman and joining Lady Buds, a mentoring program for young underprivileged girls, I understood to a degree, how social change impacts people and their communities. However, after being a part of Lady Buds, my understanding of social change vastly increased, specifically how it affects the communities within Atlanta and on a larger scale our society. Upon entering Spelman college, I knew I wanted to be involved with a mentoring group, and while there was a multitude of groups to choose from, I decided on Lady Buds because their mission statement resonated with my goal before entering Spelman College.…

My first memory at North Carolina Governor’s School West is of crying next to my parents on a bench under a giant tree. It was move-in day for the five-and-a-half-week session, and I was already sure that they would be the worst weeks of my life. I was terrified; I knew no one except two students from my high school, who were rising juniors and to whom I had never spoken before. After that stressful first day, I fell asleep unsure of how I could make it on my own in a place filled with such talented, intelligent, and unfamiliar people. A week later, I knew that Governor’s School would be one of the most treasured experiences of my entire life.…

I want to serve as a Peace Corps Volunteer because I want to spread my passion for learning and teaching English, and give people the gift of education in order to empower them and allow them to experience more avenues of life. As a long time English major, I have come to know that there is a great strength that comes with writing. I have seen fellow students move people with their words, and strongly communicate their ideas and having the ability to teach students these skills fills me with a profound joy. Moreover, the Peace Corps presents an opportunity to experience everything I love in life: traveling, experiencing and interacting…
