Protection is what Jonas had always grown up with, he had never, like his peers, experienced discomfort like he was going to feel when the Giver transmitted memories to him. Although Jonas was ‘different’ from the other children in the community he still thoroughly enjoyed the feeling of safety, “He likes the feeling of safety here in this warm and quiet room.” (pg.30)
Choice had been freed from the lifestyle of the community because it could supposedly lead to wrong decisions and vulnerability. Jonas was given many memories that stimulated his mind to see both positive and negative aspects outside of the community. He became familiar with and valued many memories that the Giver had transmitted. He experienced pain like he had never felt before, but he mostly valued the joyful memories such as “snow” (pg.78) and the feeling of “love” (pg.125). “Tiny, cold, feather like feelings peppered his body and face. He put out his tongue again, and caught one of the dots of cold upon it. It disappeared from his awareness instantly: but he caught another, and another. The sensation made him smile” (pg.80-81). Jonas makes many decisions of his own with the Giver by his side to help. Having been the ‘Receiver of Memory’ he had the opportunity to experience many different feelings which he valued deeply.
