Business Quality: Improving PCA Pump Safety Historically, pain has been underreported and undertreated, specifically in acute care settings. According to by Tran, Ciarkowski, Wagner, and Stevenson (2012), nearly half of post-surgical patients experience insufficient pain relief while using a more conservative intramuscular (IM) opioid therapy. With the 1963 discovery of intravenous (IV) pain relief as a better option for controlling pain, patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) technologies developed. By and large, PCA pumps provide individualized pain relief in the inpatient setting. Notably, several risks are associated with PCA use, to include unintended overdose, severe patient harm, or even death, despite the many benefits seen with its use. This paper aims to explore the writer’s state of practice and existing conditions, describe the new proposed solution, create a market analysis, give an explanation of how the plan will be implemented, create a GANTT chart timeline for implementation, evaluate the proposed plan for effectiveness, and lastly, develop a program budget.
