Political correctness claims to be deeply rooted in acceptance, diversity, and tolerance, yet ironically the PC Police more closely resemble the temperament of the Party when confronted with ideas which challenge their beliefs. PC Police have a very black and white view of the world, regarding people as either an “ally” or a “bigot,” with no middle ground. They are completely intolerant to opposing views; their dogmatic belief in the infallibility of their principles leaves the PC Police unable to entertain, or even understand opposing views. This plays itself out daily on campuses across America, where students put the liberal in liberal arts college. A recent outburst against a Yale administrator, in which students shouted over him as he attempted to explain his reasoning, is a cogent representation of this phenomenon. Yet one need not look further than CC’s campus to see this in action; frequently in classroom discussions, students engage in a circlejerk, continually validating the prevailing liberal opinion while shooting down opposing opinions as “backwards,” “misguided,” and “bigoted.” This tendency for groupthink reinforces the perceived infallibility of political correctness and precludes the possibility of any alternative beliefs, much like the absolute hegemony of the …show more content…
What’s in vogue is always in flux, and things once advocated as politically correct are now deemed offensive; the shift from GLBT to the ever-changing alphabet soup of LGBTQA+ identities is but one example of the ever-moving target of political correctness. Good intentions count for nothing in this constantly changing atmosphere, and one slight misstep can prove very costly; just as Rubashov was executed for his defection, many professors and administrators have been terminated for expressing opinions which are at odds with those sanctioned by the PC
