Reflection On Paycheck

After watching the documentary Paycheck to Paycheck, I was left with a lot of uncertainty about people living in poverty. It is truly devastating how can single mothers survive with having such low income. It makes me extremely mad the fact that there is no more help for someone in this kind of situation who really needs a hand. It is truly amazing to see how Katrina manages to raise her three children by herself making that little amount of salary. Sincerely my heart was breaking watching this because I can totally relate to her story. Even though I’m not living in those circumstances I have two little kids who depend on me and you really start to understand this once you become a mother.
One of the things from the documentary that made me

Sometimes you could tell that the kids wanted to stay home or be with their dad but she had to make the sacrifice of leaving them there so she could go to work and be able to support for them. When the footage of her job was showing I was very content because it was obvious that she loves what she does. She was very caring and loving with her patients. Sometimes during the documentary, I asked myself how can she do all of this alone? Is that even possible? Because I have my husbands and mother’s support but she had nobody but herself. I thought that going through all of that it was a lot more than she could handle. She was going to get to the point of breaking down because she needed help. To help her children, she needed to help herself first.
When they gave away the dog it made me very sentimental but it was the right decision since there’s enough on her plate and a pet is a lot of work is like having another child. I was happy to see that the dog had a good owner and she was going to take care of the puppy. After, when she was getting her hair done I was a little skeptical and kept thinking that she couldn’t buy the medicines but she was paying for the salon. Then it made sense because that was her way of escaping from reality for a second and realize that she needed time for herself. It was her way of getting a mommy break

It helped me realize how much work needs to be done and how many people like Katrina are out there. Even though is sad is the world that we are living in and all we can do is try to make a positive change. Being a social worker is about helping those in needs and becoming the change that we want to see in the world. Is not our words that count but our actions who demonstrate the type of person we are. Is not about right or wrong but doing the best that you can to help others in need. Simply, is about making change happened one day at a

Enrique’s Journey The issue of immigrant mothers leaving home in order to give their children and families a better life has become a big one. Some say that the mother should go and search for the better life even if it means not seeing her children for a very long time, but others say that it would have been best for the mothers to stay and be there for her children and family. This topic is important because it could have many outcomes, and could impact the lives of many families. For example some immigrant mothers have left their country and family to find jobs in the U.S.…

I will discuss about the “Michael and Danielle and Family” video link. This couple with 6 children was renting from a landlord that let the house go into foreclosure. They were given 2 hours to evacuate their home, and were forced to live in a hotel. Although the statistics given by Berne et al., were from 1990, even current statistics still show that approximately 900,000 homeless people each year are families. Although Michael has a job, it still wasn’t enough to keep a roof over his family.…

Arnisha Jones University of Michigan-Flint While reading the book “Fire in the Ashes: The twenty-five years among the poorest children in America”, I gained understanding of why the book was chosen to be read within my sociology class. The author, Johnathan Kozol, gave a very good detail and needed story about the issue of poverty and children and families living in it. In today’s generation everyone has a chance to be blessed in a variety of ways, but yet poverty is still a huge issue. I think that many have gained this attitude of “do better for yourself and leave to a better environment”, and forgot about those that are left behind; Instead of staying and helping change for the better.…

The one thing that really struck me in the video was something that one of the homeless guys Nathaniel Mccray said. He said that he was a part of something called tent city. During my senior year in high school, for my civil engineering and architecture project, the theme was shelter. My team decided to focus on the residence and tent city, a group of homeless people that have learned to live self sufficiently amongst each other in their own environment.…

After reading, “It’s Hard to Make it in America: How the United States Stopped Being the Land of Opportunity” by Lane Kenworthy, I realized that people from lower income families don’t have the same chances that people from higher income families have. I think that this is worth the read because it shows things from the lower income families point of view. That side is not usually seen because it isn’t good to publicize the poor and the weak in a country, so instead they only show how successful the higher income people are , and try to forget about the lower income families who are trying to survive too. Overall my impression of the article was that it was very well written and compelling. I think that it will really make some of the people with better opportunity maybe doublethink and be more understanding towards…

“Changing the face of Poverty: Nonprofit and the Problem of Representation,” by Diana George, is about the misrepresentation of poverty shown through the mainstream media and films. I think it was very courageous of Susan Hamovitch to make a documentary of her family’s most painful, protective secret at that time. In the early 90’s, when people were judged, criticized, made fun of, and in some cases even punished for what Susan tried to reveal to the world, was very daring. It must have been not easy for Susan, nor for her family, to reveal their family’s secret to the world as the mother said to Susan when she told her her intention of making a documentary of their family secret “well, you’ve certainly dropped a bombshell.” It was a bombshell for the family because of what they kept secret of their whole life was about to be revealed to the world. The secret of the family was Alan, who never developed the ability to speak as his…

By taking a deep look into our own cultural background it helps one become socially aware of our own biases. Being aware of our own biases allows one a way of deep reflection to get past differences and truly support indigenous and oppressed populations. Every person at some point is exposed to biases, privilege, and oppression by exploring your own self location, having a family conversation, and reflecting how one continues privilege and oppression is the start to combating the cycle of maltreatment of others. The poor in American Society are the victims of the social theory referred to as CONFLICT THEORY. The theory explains that the social STRATIFICTION SYSTEM is not functioning properly and the rich benefit more from the governmental decisions at the expense of the disadvantaged, those who rightly need the assistance. This theory is shockingly apparent in the Frontline documentary “Poor Kids”. This film follows the lives of three families’ struggling to deal with life’s most crippling situations the best way they can. The film demonstrates that being poor is not always a question of a PERSONAL PROBLEM related to the ABUSE of drugs or alcohol, but of a SOCIAL PROBLEM with unemployment, lack of job opportunities, and in this particular film, recession.…

There are many problems with poverty and inequality, and the solutions that the community is coming up with to solve these problems are not suitable. This is a hardship that is not only difficult for those living in need, but also for the community who has to watch them struggle through life.
