Music from Syria and Beyond: The Melody of Love As an Arab, growing up in the Middle East had contributed to developing my musical identity. The sensational Middle Eastern music has always been a way to my heart. On October first, my musical soul found its home in Paul F. Sharp Concert Hall at the Catlett Music Center. Both Kenan Adnawi and Tareq Rantisi played a major role in nourishing my soul through performing Middle Eastern music by using Oud and percussion instruments. Each Kenan Adnawi, the Syrian Oud player, and Tareq Rantisi, the Palestinian percussion player, have their own distinctive contributions in the music field.…

    Wadada Leo Smith Analysis

Trumpeter-composer Wadada Leo Smith owns an inimitable avant-jazz voice and an out-of-the-box creativity that is patented throughout a prolific career. If last year he delighted me twice with A Cosmic Rhythm With Each Stroke (duo record with pianist Vijay Iyer) and America’s National Park, this year he strikes again with another couple of powerful albums, Solo Reflections and Meditations on Monk and Najwa, the object of this review and a bow to major American jazz artists. The album’s acute bite comes not only from Wadada’s limpid sequence of notes, but also from quirky textures weaved by the four guitarists in service: Brandon Ross, Michael Gregory Jackson, Henry Kaiser, and Lamar Smith, plus the constantly ominous bass presence of Bill Laswell and the impressive, ever-adaptable percussive flow by drummer Pheeroan AkLaff. The rhythms are magnified by the actions of percussionist Adam Rudolph.…

One of the biggest questions philosophers are faced with is “How do we know we are conscious or not?”. The question cannot easily be answered know if we aren’t fully aware of consciousness itself. An easy way to interpret this concept is a quote from an Indian philosopher when he made a comparison of an eye not being able to look at itself (Solomon, 2008, p. 19), which means that we can understand the world with the use of it, but we cannot understand consciousness itself. I will argue in this paper that the life-like robot Harold is conscious because he is aware of his own existence and the existence of the world around him. First let me introduce the subject Harold, he is a life-like robot, which looks, acts and responds like an ordinary…

On December 2nd, 2016 at the Constance theatre the dance department presented a show called Agbedidi. The show, directed and choreographed by Mohamed DaCosta and Trent D. Williams, Jr., displayed a combination of Traditional African and Contemporary Dance. The house buzzed with excitement as the start of the show approached. It is quite encouraged to see such a large audience at an event, but this audience also brought a positive, vibrant atmosphere for the dancers to soak up. I was curious to see what this year’s performance would look like.…

DOING ETHNOMUSICOLOGY REFLECTION In this reflective essay, I intend to broadly outline a range of pertinent questions, issues and methodologies in ethnomusicology, and their relevance across the disciplines. The seminars were guided more in a way of deep contemplation on global concerns and musical customs rather than hypothesis driven inquiries, introducing us to a vast array of literature in a highly interactive and interdisciplinary environment. I made some rousing discoveries in my assigned readings of articles by Jonathan McCollum-David G. Hebert, Thomas Turino, Émile Durkheim, Steven Feld, Timothy Rice, John Blacking, Bruno Nettle and Carol Silverman among others. I will categorise my reflections under general sub-headings, which I hope,…
