If schools did not demand that athletes must pay the school to play in their chosen sport or sports, then the school could cut all sporting activities due to not having enough funding for all of the commodities that the sport requires. Students who participate in sports are much healthier and confident with themselves than students who do not. Also, if students are paying to play a sport, they will put more effort into the sport so they will be able to participate in the games. They are also more motivated to complete their homework and to keep their grades up so they are eligible to continue their membership on their team. According to Smith, when the school budget has a problem, the athletic budget has a problem. In most districts and in most states, it’s impossible to break even and pay off all their bills. Across the country, most athletic budgets are one to three percent of the school district budget (Cerling & Herman). Demanding a pay-to-play policy is beneficial for athletes and the school. “Increasingly, pay-to-play fees are becoming a reality of high school athletics” (Popke, 2007). Pay-to-play gives the school an opportunity to raise more money for sports and other school activities. If schools enforced a pay to play policy, schools would receive more money for sports and other school activities, sports are very important to a student’s educational growth, and when a school eliminates all sports, most adolescents would request to transfer to another school
