My article of choice revolves around the connection between overdoses and the environment that they happen in. In the article “A case report: Pavlovian conditioning as a risk factor of heroin 'overdose' death” by Harm Reduct J. a situation is studied connecting a familiar drug with an unfamiliar environment, causing an overdose. Pavalovian conditioning is a process of behavior modification in which an innate response to a potent biological stimulus becomes expressed in response to a previously neutral stimulus, achieved by repeated pairings of the neutral stimulus and the potent biological stimulus that evokes the desired response. This was idea was made famous by Ivan Pavlov, best known for his experiments with dogs. The subject, a 26-year old male, had developed the habit of using the drug everyday. His dosage however stayed the same, a steady .5 grams of heroin. The subject would always take heroin in the same environment, which was at home with his wife. The two had been taking heroin for nearly a year, having tried several times to quit, but could never last more than a week without relapsing. After having decided to give up the drug and try to quit again, the subject relapsed on his way to work and stopped to see his usual drug dealer. After purchasing his usual amount (0.5 grams), the subject then went to a public bathroom in the pedestrian underpass of Nepliget Metro Station. Here he injected heroin of the same quantity and quality that he had done the day before in an accustomed environment. Authorities were then called out.
