Education techniques have been analyzed, approved of, contradicted, and rewritten countless times over the course of history. There is no one perfect method of transferring information from one human to another. There are only methods that work better than others, and methods that are not as effective. In the essay “The ‘Banking’ Concept of Education” that was found in the “Ways of Reading” textbook, the author reviews one of these many methods. The method reviewed was coined by Paulo Freire, who argues that the standard forms of education, “define the teacher as the active agent and the student as the passive agent.” Freire argues this method isn’t effective. The purpose of the essay is to show that Freire’s belief is correct by use of example through the author’s past experience. The author does an exceptional job of providing a convincing example that fits Freire’s belief, but could’ve made a bigger impact on his audience by explaining the Banking Concept of Education in detail, offering an alternative teaching method, and explaining why he personally believes education by memorization is inferior to other methods. Different students respond in different ways to different language and culture. The same theory can be applied to methods of education. Mentioning something like this, especially since it is based off of Freire’s theories, would’ve been beneficial to the author’s argument. Criticizing the method at hand without offering an alternative causes the author to appear as an angry student as opposed to an educated person on the topic. Providing examples and speaking from an educated standpoint is a much better way to get a point across, and prevents readers from interpreting the message as a complaint.
