Paulo Freire The Banking Concept Analysis

Paulo Freire does an excellent job of communicating with and compelling his audience that “the banking concept method” creates a problem for future generations. In the essay, his purpose is to show new generations how different education system work. His only goal was to divide education systems into two parts: “Banking Concept” and “Problem-Posing.” He states the banking concept is a horrible way of teaching and prevents students from learning the process and think of a solution on their own. Freire discusses that this concept of teaching is common and provides student no conceptual understanding. Even though students are being given concepts they’re only absorbing enough information to pass the courses, they’re not getting a deeper understanding of the concepts. Then he chooses an alternative way of teaching known as “problem-posing” method, which makes everyone responsible for teaching and learning. This allows students to communicate their knowledge to others. It is the most successful way of learning. When students reiterate the information they learn, they’re not only showing mastery of the concepts but also a deeper understanding of the concepts.

For example, when I was taking my citizenship test the first question they asked me who actually was the first president of the United States. I knew he was George Washington, but I did not know why he was important. Freire uses logic to solve the problem and to draw several conclusions. “In the Banking Concept of education, Freire stated, “knowledge is a gift bestowed by those who consider themselves knowledgeable upon those whom they consider knowing nothing (Freire p.244).”
