Paulo Freire: The Banking Concept Of Banking Education

The banking concept of education is a way of teaching embraced by some teachers. It focuses on making students memorize and repeat the information without understanding. Paulo Freire, a Brazilian educator and philosopher, strongly opposes the idea of banking education in his paper “The banking concept of education”. Freire believes that banking education should be abandoned in its entirety and replaced by “problem posing education”. Personally, I’ve experienced both types of education. I believe that problem posing education is better than banking education. However, I don’t support the idea of completely abandoning the banking concept because it’s sometimes effective. Freire is strongly against banking education. He states, “It turns them into “containers”, into “receptacles”to be filled by the teachers”(1). Freire believes that the banking concept of education restricts the creative power of the students. Banking education makes students repeat and memorize what the teachers say without understanding. He states, “Problem-posing education involves a constant unveiling of reality”. Life is in progress and will never stop at a certain point. Therefore, there’s no limit to the knowledge we can receive. Problem-posing education opposes the idea of banking education. It requires that students and teachers communicate with each other and learn about the world around them. Problem-posing make the students challenged and willing to invent and create. Life isn’t static. Students can’t just memorize the textbooks and believe that it’s 100% accurate. Life changes everyday. Therefore, students and teachers should work together to discover reality. They should communicate in a way that makes both of them profit. A teacher doesn’t only teach his students, but he also learns from
