Paulo Coelho's The Alchemist

Every single person on Earth has a different life story. Many people have the choice of how they want to live their lives and some do not. Each person has a different secret to what makes their life lovable. In Paulo Coelho’s novel, The Alchemist, the main character’s secret to life is to always listen to the signs that the world gives you. Santiago(the main character) listens to these signs and achieves his personal legend(life’s purpose). Santiago receives many signs throughout his journey of pursuing his personal legend. The main ways that he receives these signs are through the king, nature, the Englishman, and the Alchemist. Santiago meets King Melchizedek in the beginning of the novel. He is the first person that mentions to Santiago that he must embark in search of his personal legend. The king talks about other people’s success stories and how, …show more content…
He first tells him that, “everything in life is an omen”(70). The other large piece of advice that the Englishman gives is that, “everything on Earth...transformed, because the earth is alive...and it has a soul”(74). This teaches him that everything has a purpose, you just have to listen to the signs that are given by those objects in order further yourself. Another person that helps Santiago interpret signs is the Alchemist. The Alchemist is probably the most influential person that Santiago encounters. The Alchemist teaches Santiago how to listen to the “soul of the world”(101). This includes how to read the desert, the winds, the plant/animal life, the desert dwellers, and his heart. The most important of all of these though, is how to read your own heart. The only way to find true happiness is to, “listen to you heart. It knows all things, because it came from the Soul of the World”(127).
