Paula's Grandmother: A Case Study

Paula is an only child and currently lives at home with her biological parents and her paternal grandmother in a two bedroom apartment in Placentia CA. Both her parents are very involved and supportive of her and her needs. Her father works full time as a clerk in a sprinkler supply store and her mother is a homemaker. Paula’s paternal grandmother has intermittently cared for Paula during times her parents were unavailable. Paula requires supervision at all times due to behaviors. She demonstrates excellent self-advocacy skills and will attend to most self-care needs independently. Her mother is the primary support with more complicated medical, financial and daily living necessities with input from Paula. Paula’s relationship with her grandmother can be strained at times, as her grandmother only speaks Spanish, which creates a language barrier. Their relationship is further compromised by her grandmother attempts to parent Paula. Paula is bilingual in English and Spanish, though she only communicates in English and can become highly irritable if asked to communicate in Spanish. Both parents are fluent in English and Spanish and typically use a mixture of both languages when speaking with Paula. Paula is a first generation US citizen and at birth her legal name was “Liliana Aguillon”, however in 2015, she legally changed it to “Paula Aguillon”.
