The Dred Scott Decision In 1846, after about 46 years of being a slave, I awoke feeling confident and brave. Today I would do something I been thinking about doing this forever. Today I went to the Missouri State Court and I asked the court to be free, claiming that I have lived in a free state and territory. But, the court claimed I was still a slave.…
Overall the essays that we have read this semester have been good. There are a few essays in particular that I think benefited me the most was “The Time to Act I Now” written by Al Gore, “Just Walk on By” written by Brent Staples, and the “Letter from Birmingham Jail” written by Martin Luther King. These essays have benefited me in a numerous amount of ways in which I am going to explain how their writing styles helped me become a better writer. Staples helped me a lot in which he taught me to explain my reasoning fully so that the audience know exactly what I am talking about. Another thing that Staples taught me was to explain the setting of the story in full detail so the readers can visualize what’s actually happening in the story this…
For the most part, our similarities such as goals, amount of comments, and the way comments are written and to praise or criticize became main points for students to learn to read and respond properly and adequately towards a student’s paper. Richard Straub’s reading is advice for students on what to do exactly when responding in order for them to manage a paper without to rely on the teacher; remember the teacher will not always be there to guide you. Writing in full statements and be serious on what you comment is what Richard Straub and I experienced with reading and responding. Small dull statements will lead the writer to nowhere near improving because he or she will be confused and not know what to do. Overall, Richard Straub experiences and mine are the same in terms on how each thing is being done and achieve the goal of helping the writer improve its…
In my visual rhetorical assignment, I feel I did a great job on describing how pathos had a huge influence on the tactic Extra gum used for their commercial I chose. For example, in my paper, I mentioned plenty of times on how Extra gum used romance to reel in their audience with emotion. How it could relate to many different types of people in recent relationships, old relationships, or even single people. I did not feel like I needed to change this topic just because it was really important to know how Extra gum used it. I feel like describing pathos is something that I find easy to talk about.…
When I write,I try to capture in words, the half etched thoughts, the unformed silences ,the vaguely understood swirl of emotions all entangled with and undifferentiated from the chaotic images that flash and disappear. When I visualize, I try to capture,in images this time, those half etched thoughts, those unformed silences, those vaguely understood swirls of emotions entangled with and undifferentiated from the chaotic words that flash and disappear. An image, that has never been a word before except vaguely, while it was evolving in the mind, or, a word that has been an image only in the same conditions, stands by itself as the first representation of a reality(or fantasy) that has till then seen only the world of the mind from which it evolved. It is individualistic, unique and beyond judgement , like a new born baby.…
Thoroughly reading writing related to what you are working on will help you to write with stronger technique. This will also give you a sense of direction and prevent you from feeling stressed or lost when writing your…
This little tip helped me to sharpen my critical analytical skills. Now that I am constantly asking myself similar questions as to those of my professor, I am able to break every piece of writing into small topics. Thus, I can grasp the main idea of every writer easily. Not only I learned how to read critically, but I also learned how to identify different writing styles. To clarify, whenever I am in the process of breaking the information into small pieces, I have identified that certain authors have the same patterns in their writings.…
In Paul McHenry Roberts “How to say nothing in 500 words”, I was caught up by the colorfully words strategy. As I understand by his explanation using colorful words does not mean using literary colors to pen down words rather to get depth and meaning out of the message that is to be conveyed. Using these words would in turn help the reader formulate better the scene that the writer is trying to convey. This is an effective way of author to audience communication I personally find this one of the most important strategies that any writer should follow because, being a writer the main purpose that we are writing for is to get our thoughts, opinions our visions across to our chosen audience just the way we formed it in our head.…
As a writer one of the strengths I find, is the ability to know how to word things. Although, sometimes my work doesn’t always sound good, it does when I take the time and apply myself. A challenge I face in writing includes, introductions, and conclusions, also being able to write a lot about something. I did however, learn how to properly write an intro and conclusion in this course.…
How to Write with Style Everyone has his or her own writing style, and some writing styles are considerably more distinct than others; however, anyone’s writing style can and should be improved over time. There really is no one specific or perfect way to write because everyone has different opinions on what is well written and what is poorly written, so it is important to alter one’s style so as to capture the attention of very different audiences. Kurt Vonnegut, an amazingly talented author from the 20th century, wrote an essay entitled “How to Write with Style” which gives excellent techniques on how to better anyone’s writing style. Each of his techniques has an explanation as to why they should be used, and he uses each of them in his essay.…
In writing your suppose to use descriptive details and to always have a point to why you are writing the story. My writing didn’t until I came to college; being in your class has been teaching me how to write. It’s bad a way that I just started writing because I have way…
In Kurt Vonnegut’s article, he explains why you should examine your writing style with the idea of improving it. In order to do so, Vonnegut suggest the following seven step process: 1. Finding a subject that you care about, 2. Do not ramble, 3. Keeping it simple, 4.…
I was always told that an essay is developed around a thesis statement and resources that support my opinions about a prompt. I realized that there was more to an essay when I came across scholarly writing, which is writing on a higher level, usually one which we come across during college. It meets high standards of communication with outlines, tone, deductive reasoning, format, and way of analytical approach. It has a consistent way of delivering thoughts, shaping arguments, and narrowing down the subject to explain the main idea. With scholarly writing, students must express their thoughts through thesis statements, and develop an argument with their own thinking, not minding to be objective to clear any chance of bias.…
I struggle with writing papers. I do not enjoy writing papers. I have a difficult time “responding” to the prompt. I dislike writing papers because I believe my writing is weak. I have trouble addressing my audience when writing.…
Every individual has his or her own writing process. But, certainly writing is an art and the five-step process of writing which seems to be linear starting from prewriting to publishing is cyclical and recursive. Keeping a track of this process a writer can carve out a way to a good piece of writing on any topic. The writing process has five steps, which are prewriting, drafting, revising, editing and publishing. These steps are written like a recipe, the sequence is really essential.…
