Paul Bernardo Crimes

There are many notorious killers in today’s history. The forms of these killings are very astonishing, especially when it’s a wife and a husband alliance. According to a news article, “The Real Story of Paul Bernardo and Karla Homolka” (2009), Paul Bernardo and Karla Homolka were sentenced to jail after committing multiple illegal activities. Typically, many notorious killers have an unstable background, which leads them to commit these horrific killings. Paul Kenneth Bernardo was born on August 27, 1964. He had a very dysfunctional family in which he saw many unethical things his father would do to his mother (“The Ken and Barbie Killers,” 2009). Although Paul was committing multiple sexual assaults, he wasn’t once caught. However in May 25, 1988, a Metro Toronto investigator noticed Bernardo hiding under a tree, but Bernardo escaped. These attacks would last for less than an hour. According to murderpedia.org (2007), if a victim would fight him off, he would use a knife to threaten them. In total he committed 11 rapes between 1987-1990 (“The Ken and Barbie Killers,” 2009). According to the news article, “The Ken and Barbie Killers”(2009), none of Paul’s family was aware of this, except for Karla Homolka who helped him rape her own sister, Tammy Homolka. This shows that both Paul and Karla had no compassion over others. However, Karla started to do unethical things when she met Paul. On the other hand, Paul started his unusual behaviors long before he met Karla Homolka. The victims whom Karla helped Paul rape and kill was Tammy Homolka, Leslie Mahaffy, and Kristen French. Paul was obsessed with Tammy Homolka, which was Karla’s younger sister. In 1990, Karla drugged Tammy with Valium in order to allow Bernardo to rape Tammy (“Paul Kenneth Bernardo,” 2007). However, Tammy began to choke on her …show more content…
After torturing Kristen by forcing her to drink alcohol and to behave submissively to Paul, both Karla and Paul murdered Kristen (“The ken and Barbie Killers,”2009). Although they both murdered Kristen, they testified at their trail different stories. Bernardo stated that Homolka “beat her with a rubber mallet because she had tried to escape.” Homolka stated that Bernardo “strangled French for exactly seven minutes while she watched” (Weebly, 2006). This shows that they both are not trustworthy and they don’t show responsibility over their criminal activities. However, Paul committed many more crimes than Karla. Besides the three victims that they raped and killed, Paul did many other killings in between. On January 5th, 1993, Karla got a severe beating by Paul, which was when she confessed to her relatives of their criminal activities (Weebly, 2006). After being found guilty, Bernardo was charged with sexual assault and murder, and Homolka for manslaughter. Karla stated that she was a victim in the criminal activities because Paul forced her to do those things (Weebly, 2006). However, in the videotapes showed her active role in the

It was before Bernardo had met Homolka when he started to rape woman. His first act was in May of 1987 (CBC News, 2010).
