Patti Delgadillo

Superior Essays
Throughout all her adult life, Patti Delgadillo fought with food against possible ailments. She armed herself with flavor blends and nutrient-dense meals against a foreign enemy. She avoided processed foods, refined sugars, and plastic bottles in order to minimize her risk of getting cancer. When cancer reared its ugly head into Patti’s life, however, she remained true to her ideals and her commitments for a fit, healthy family.

Patti is 44 years old and is? the primary food preparer in her family. She cherishes mealtime, considering it a way to reconnect with her family. She inherited this philosophy from her father, who used Sunday morning waffles before church as an opportunity to relate to the rest of his family. Patti learned from this tradition the importance of eating with family members and does so at least twice a day. On weekends, she finds herself waking up her kids for no other reason than to eat breakfast together. The Delgadillos eat together and provide their children an opportunity to ask questions about life, the world, and each other. She was so discouraged when she received her diagnosis, she let her healthy eating habits slip. She began to indulge herself on ice cream, especially during chemotherapy. She was bitter about her cancer diagnosis after doing so much to avoid it pre-emptively, so she turned to sweets. At a certain point, however, she concluded that she should not end her healthy lifestyle and food habits; she should increase them. She realized her body needs all the nutrients it can get so that it can do its job and fight the cancer. She grew more serious about her kale juice smoothies and ultimately(synonym?) removed her guilty pleasure of chocolate from her diet. Her youngest son, Mason, now plays an integral part of preparing and drinking the green smoothies
