The Poetics: Macbeth Aristotle is a famous philosopher, as well as, an early scientist who wrote the Poetics; which, was written about a tragedy and focuses on literary theory. The Poetics consist of: plot, character, theme, diction, music, and spectacle. I watched the production of Macbeth that was directed by Rupert Goold and produced by David Horn in 2007. Macbeth is a tragedy based on a brave Scottish general who’s ambitious actions overtake him and turn him into a guilty, evil person. The first element of The Poetics is plot; which, contains the questions of who, where, when, and what has gone before? William Shakespeare is the writer of this play, he did an incredible job with his words in this play. David Horn kept up with Shakespeare’s version of word choice, he kept the poetic language and did not convert the word usage to the 2007 slang. Patrick Stewart also does an amazing job speaking in this play, he uses great diction and his accent sounds very spot on. Patrick Stewart has been nominated for many different acting awards and was nominated for Outstanding Performance by Male Actor for Macbeth. The fifth element of The Poetics is music. In this showing of Macbeth, there is not any specific songs. In the beginning, there is a lot of “war music” played. There is a lot of creepy musical elements to this play. There is a scene where the three witches are singing and dancing to creepy sounds in the background. The music element of this play makes everything creepier and more dramatic. The final element of The Poetics is spectacle, or something worth seeing. The 2007 play of Macbeth used great costumes which made the characters seem played out even better. In the play, the three witches are portrayed as 20th century hospital nurses; which, are portrayed incredibly well. They pulled off the modern-day look very nicely. They use a hospital stretcher as a prop to set up the imagery of people dying throughout the play and it pulls together the creepy witch nurse
