The Patrick Henry Speech Patrick Henry speaks to the men of the Virginia Convention and goes to them to show his respect and honor. In "The Speech in the Virginia Convention" Patrick Henry tells them he must speak his mind even if they disagree, and based on experience the king of England will not listen to them. Henry claims the colonists must fight! Patrick Henry created this speech to convince the men to at least vote to go to war against the British. Henry first addresses the convention stating he must speak his mind even if they disagree. He uses elevated language to assure them that he respects them in every way possible. " I hope that it will not be thought disrespectful to those gentlemen, if entertaining as I do, opinions of a character very opposite to theirs"(263). Henry also wants all of them to think in their own way how they should go about fighting for liberty, in a rhetorical question. " Is this the part of wise men, engaged in a great and arduous struggle for liberty" (263)? "Three millions of people, armed in the holy cause of liberty, and in such a country as that which we possess, are invincible by any force which our enemy can send against us"(266). Meaning if they all have faith and participate in the war against Britain they will be strong. He also uses emotional appeal to pull at the heartstrings of the colonists and to make them fearless. "There is a just God who presides over the destinies of nations; and who will raise up friends to fight battles for us"(266). The colonist won't be alone fighting for independence, our 'friend' was France. France had helped fight against the British mostly because they didn't get along with them. This reassurance left no reason why they shouldn't at least consider going to war against
